Wow, Tommy Smothers just said it's hard to watch ignorance in action

after he made a reference to war and talked about freedom of speech (in his case when they stifled him) and I think he dedicated his Emmy to the people who have something to say and refuse to shut up. He was accepting a belated Emmy for his show that took place I think in the late 60's.

Major kudos to Tommy. They should have never fucked with him and his show so many years ago when they tried to make him shut up.

5. The best thing I have ever seen on TV

was the show they did during the musician's strike. Everyone performed a capella with audience participation and the result was magical.

Magic just doesn't happen very often, especially on TV, and it was just the one show.

Some in the entertainment industry say art reflects culture, but that show didn't reflect it - it opened the window and let the counter-culture straight into America's living room.

What makes it all the more special is that it was so free from the self-aware hipness and smugness that many of its descendants fall prey to.
