Again, It Takes Jimmy Carter to Speak Out
Edited on Mon Sep-22-08 10:05 AM by whereismyparty
It amazes me that 360 people have viewed this thread and only 5 have responded, 13 recs. An innocent man is about to die. I guess the other 340+ people who read this weren't moved enough by this man's plight. What more can I say to energize them into sending a email or, at least, kicking this? THIS MAN IS GOING TO DIE.

Again, It Takes Jimmy Carter to Speak Out
by howardpark
Mon Sep 22, 2008 at 06:33:06 AM PDT

President Jimmy Carter has called for clemency for Troy Davis who is scheduled to be executed tomorrow in Georgia. "This case illustrates the deep flaws in the application of the death penalty in this country. Executing Troy Davis without a real examination of potentially exonerating evidence risks taking the life of an innocent man and would be a grave miscarriage of justice. The citizens of Georgia should demand the highest standards of proof when our legal system condemns on our behalf a man or woman to die."

http://www.alternet.org/...

As usual, Carter is a lonely voice of color-blind justice in a sea of political posturing. Even if you think the death penalty is justified in some cases our system ought to be able to apply it only when guilt is proven. The dirty little secret of many states is that innocent people are condemned to death all the time because they don't get good legal representation early in the "justice" process. The death penalty is not a sexy issue. It is uncomfortable. It often has racial overtones.

Execution is the ultimate power of the state. Executing an innocent man is the ultimate injustice, the ultimate crisis. It's a shame that it takes an 83 year old ex-president with no political future to speak out. Thanks again to Jimmy Carter, the greatest living American.

Please DU! I posted something about this yesterday, but it didn't get very far. Please Kick and recommend this.

http://www.amnestyusa.org/death-penalty/troy-davis-finality-over-fairness/page.do?id=1011343&n1=3&n2=28&n3=1412

Send an email to your State Death Penalty Abolition Coordinator (SDPAC). Just click the above link and look on the right side of the screen. Click the blue "contact" link and type your protest. Something like "Stop the execution of Troy Davis!" would do just fine. Then send. It's easy and quick. Please, let's try to stop this injustice.

It will only take a few seconds of your time. An innocent man is about to be executed!

8. TX is horrible on this too. I was really waken up on this issue when I read a LONG article
in Atlantic Monthly several years ago talking about how many death row people had been exonerated since DNA testing has come about, how many poor people accused of murder and other serious crimes get crappy/drunk public 'defenders', etc.

60. Most of the South...
The disparity is to be found in most of the South. Minorities, particularly African-Americans, are automatically guilty. Just because they're minorities.

But Texas is apparently in a league of its own in terms of exonerating the innocent. The former Harris County District Attorney in one case stated he didn't care what the DNA said. He "knew" the man was guilty. Apparently he was "guilty" just because he was African-American. The former district attorney resigned after a "sex scandal" earlier this year but also after he was caught having committed perjury in a civil rights lawsuit that had been filed against the Harris County Sheriff's Department. Republicans of course don't commit perjury. They have bad memories. His excuse was he had a bad reaction to medication which affected his memory. Texas without doubt is the most corrupt state in the country and Harris County is still the most corrupt county in Texas.

It would be nice to think things will change in November but I doubt it. Republicans in Texas are like cockroaches. Very hard to get rid of once they've infested the house. Democrats running in some districts of late have claimed they work well with Republicans hoping to garner support from moderate Republicans. So far few of those Democrats have been elected. Republicans work better with each other. Although they do love the racist Democratic votes. There are lots of racist Democrats in Texas. There are very few if any Republicans who aren't racist.

God bless Jimmy Carter. But reality is that to quite a few people in this country, there is no such thing as an innocent minority. When they read about these cases, they all justify it on the basis that if the person didn't commit this particular murder, well, they probably did commit another murder so what's the difference? Just one less minority to have to deal with. Racism is still very much a reality in America.

But it's not always just a minority. Or just a poor white. It's anyone that the "good old boys" want to get rid of. Best way to shut someone up is ship them off to prison. Happens all the time. Particularly in Texas. And some of the "troublemakers" probably have ended up on death row. Set up by a corrupt system that protects itself at any cost.

The good old boys. Really not such good boys. Most of them sheer evil.

a government legal officer subsequently.

I don't even disagree with the death penalty in principle. It's simply that this is yet another illustration of how profoundly degenerate the US has become.

An innocent man's execution is of no interest, and instead of an official execution, it becomes a murder of devilish malice by individuals of signal depravity. It seems that neither the law of the land, nor the most elementary natural justice impinges upon their consciousness. Darkness visible, murder most foul. And I believe I have read that it is not uncommon over there. It's not difficult to imagine the official responsible leading a lynching party.

Reagan conned and manipulated the electorate.

Reagan's campaign was in secret negotiations with Iranians so the hostages would be released on the day of his inauguration.

74. I do not like the death penalty either
Since the the dawn of time people have been excutating people for varies reasons. And if i am say so some for very stupid reasons. Like take queen anne , who was marred to king henry the eight (NO I don't mean Paulsen) she was executed on trumped up charges of audra ry. In this day age it is time to be a little more civilized about. I just did a paper for school recently on the death penalty. it is surprising that some people dna has not come through and people for years spend there time on death row just to find out they were innocent the who time. The thing about poor legal representation was clearly demonstrated at the 1995 trial of O.J. simpson. while the rich can afford the best lawyers, and the poor(some are adequate0 can not afford the best there for my as well be defending themselves. This country has to change. I don't think any Europeans country still executes people. I pray for this man and i hope he Gert's a stay. because on Nov. 4th we will have a new president Barack Obama, and the king Executioner will be gone.

77. Please check email address before sending

Don't send email to Information@pap.state.ga.us or it'll bounce with the message

"User Information (Information@pap.state.ga.us) not listed in public Name & Address Book"

Gee, wonder why it isn't....

On the other hand, I got this from the Georgia State Board of Pardons & Paroles website:

Telephone: (404) 657-9350

To send us comments or questions via E-Mail:

*

Questions regarding CURRENT Georgia Inmates ( Clemency Information ) (mailto:Clemency_Information@pap.state.ga.us)

(On edit, dunno where I got that "information" email address; I thought it was in the PDF, but looking again, it isn't. Anyway, the clemency_information one appears to be correct. Sorry for any confusion!)

84. It was shocking, wasn't it? Still shocking, so few. It makes you wonder just how many on here
are trolls. And how many, self-interested, but no more.

they're ALL questionable -- biased -- racist --- cruel --

degrading to all of humanity --

We've let the most violent and ignorant among us assume legal leadership/control --

Shall the violent inherit the earth -- ???
