The New American Boston Tea Party starts NOW! Join in!
Edited on Mon Sep-22-08 10:53 AM by Hell Hath No Fury
DUers, you know what the score is on the proposal to spend $700 billion of our tax dollars in bailing out Wall Street with ZERO accountable and oversight.

It is time for us to act -- as another DUer put it, it is time for a NEW Boston Tea Party!

So, I am calling on each and every one of you to pick up the phone, send a fax, or hit the "send" button to let our leaders know we WILL not let this proposal stand!

Washington must be remionded that they are accountable to US, the American people, and that we are demanding accountability.

I encourage you to contact your Congressional representatiers, as well as Congressional Leaders and Secretary Paulson.

Here is my contribution:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sen. Barbara Boxer
Sen. Diane Feinstein
Speaker of the House Rep. Nancy Pelosi
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid
Senate Minorty Leader Mitch McConnell
House Minority Leader John Boehner
Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson
I am writing as an American taxpayer being called on to take on $700 billion in debt to bailout struggling Wall Street firms and banks. After reviewing the proposal being out forth by Secretary Paulson, I say:
- It is UNACCEPTABLE that there would not be strict governmental oversight on how Secretary Paulson administers this bailout.
- It is UNACCEPTABLE that there not be new, stringent regulations and independent oversight on the companies seeking bailout funds.
- It is UNACCEPTABLE that we do not require companies seeking funds to go through a restructuring similar to that under a chapter 11 bankruptcy.
- It is UNACCEPTABLE that we would simply hand over $700 billion dollars to companies that have already proven themselves incapable of managing their businesses in a responsible manner.
Unless changes are made to address these issues, I demand that you vote down any attempt to pass this proposed legistlation.
Sincerely,
Kirsten Selberg
12. There was a great thread on DU some years back ---
when many, MANY DUers just came right out and said who they were -- it was in response to one of Bush's Big Brother/civil rights bullshit things. It was a great moment -- kind of like the end of "V for Vendetta" when everyone takes off their masks. :)
10. This bailout is a consequence of our NOT having a 'Boston Tea Party' over the voting machines
all of which are now run on 'TRADE SECRET,' PROPRIETARY programming code, owned and controlled by Bushwhack corporations, with virtually no audit/recount controls. There is hardly a member of Congress who can prove that he or she was actually elected--D or R. This beclouding of our election system--this door closed on public vote counting--this 100% non-transparency of the new voting machines was not fast-tracked all over the country with a $4 billion+ e-voting boondoggle just for that $4 billion+ in profit to Bushwhack corporations. Nope. It had other purposes, and we are seeing them now. Total, naked, unmitigated looting of the American people.
I am all for the most active citizen participation--in phone calls, faxes, email and public protests. An activated citizenry is the only thing that is going to save our democracy. But do understand why these officials are deaf to us. It is because they are no longer beholden to us. They are beholden to Diebold & brethren and the global corporate predators who are running things.
After they've taken our every last dime, and the last dimes of the unborn--our grandchildren, our great grandchildren--then maybe our people will wake up and throw these 'TRADE SECRET' voting machines into 'Boston Harbor.' That is the first thing we must do--to be able to fix everything else.
Please add it to your letters: "We are going to throw your bailout AND your voting machines into 'Boston Harbor'!"
35. Here you go:
Congress is on the brink of making a one-sided deal to give George W. Bush a blank check — offering nearly (or perhaps more than) a trillion taxpayer dollars to Wall Street to cover its bad debts. That works out to somewhere between $2000 and $5000 from every American family. So what do the taxpayers get in return?
Nothing. No new regulation or oversight to help avoid this kind of crisis in the future. No public interest givebacks to help people whose homes are in the hands of the banks. Perhaps most shockingly of all, the taxpayers get absolutely no share in the profits if and when these finance giants bounce back, even though we are now assuming a great deal of the risk.
This is worse than a bad deal — this isn't a deal at all. This is a blank check to some of the richest companies in the world.
There is some good news, though: Congress doesn't have to agreet to a blank check. Instead, it can choose to impose a few sensible conditions on the bailout to ensure that it will be used responsibly. Here are a few suggestions courtesy of Robert Reich:
1) If the taxpayers are shouldering the risk, the taxpayers should reap any eventual benefits. We accomplish this by giving the government an equity stake in every company we bail out proportionate to the amount we give them.
2) If we're paying (more than) our fair share, the CEOs and executives should have to, too. All of the fat cats who got us into this mess should relinquish their stock options and salaries until they start showing us, their investors, that they can once again be profitable. Future salaries should be linked to profitability.
3) No more campaign contributions from Wall Street executives and PACs. Taxpayer dollars should be used to get our nation out of a crisis. They cannot be used to fund giant, powerful lobby operations that will be used to strong arm Congress into making bad policy.
4) Better regulations start right now. Wall Street can't expect to take thousands of dollars out of your paycheck without agreeing to increased transparency and more stringent oversight — the kind that might have helped avoid this mess to begin with.
5) Bankruptcy judges get broader leeway to help homeowners. Why should we lose our homes so the CEOs can keep theirs?
If Wall Street doesn't like these conditions, then it is welcome to find private investors to help it out of this debacle. But if the American people are going to take this hit, then we must have a say in the terms of the deal — even if we don't have an army of high-paid lobbyists at our disposal like they do.
Congress must take swift and prudent action to avoid making a burgeoning crisis that much worse. You can help by making your voice heard to Speaker Nancy Pelosi, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, House Finance Chair Barney Frank, Senate Banking Chair Chris Dodd, and the de facto leaders of the two parties: Senators Barack Obama and John McCain.
Click here to tell our elected officials that they are responsible to the taxpayers, not the Wall Street firms who line their campaign war chests. We can't afford to write another blank check for George W. Bush.
Thank you for working to build a better world.
This is critical. The Dems sold us out on Iraq. They can't get away with selling us out on the bailout.
Those who made the huge profits need to pay, even if they are retirement plans, etc. It is not fair that those of us who have lived by the rules and worked hard have to pay.
See Rep. Bernie Sanders
Issue September 18, 2008 - http://sanders.senate.gov
An Economy in Crisis
Amid one of the worst financial crises in American history, Senator Bernie Sanders laid out a four-part plan to cope with the collapse of financial institutions and avoid future failures of businesses “too big to fail.” First, Sanders proposed a surtax on the very wealthy to pay for bailouts of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and American International Group. “The wealthiest 400 families in America saw an increase in their wealth of $670 billion since President Bush has been in office. They have seen extraordinary benefits under Bush’s reckless economic policies. The middle class, whose standard of living has declined, should not be paying for these bailouts. Rather, we need an emergency surtax on those at the very top in order to pay for any losses the federal government suffers as a result of necessary efforts to shore up the economy,” Sanders said. Second, he called for stronger oversight of financial institutions and an end to President Bush’s deregulation policies. Third, huge businesses like Bank of America, which is swallowing up other large corporations, should be broken up so no company in the future could bring the American economy down with it. Said Sanders, “This country can no longer afford companies that are ‘too big to fail.’ Fourth, he called for an immediate economic stimulus package which would put people back to work rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure, and moving us to energy efficiency and sustainable energy.
36. Now THIS is the music of a people who will not be slaves again!
Sorry to mix revolutionary metaphors (that's a Les Miz lyric I'm quoting in the subject line), but I believe we have arrived at an event where it has become necessary, in order to form a more perfect union, to establish JUSTICE! This is the simple letter I have written to Congress:
When I hear the forceful pleas of politicians and bankers so vociferous regarding the impending collapse of the economy if the bailout is not approved, one word above all others springs to mind to describe what is happening: BLACKMAIL. Because these are not pleas when it involves the transfer of $700 billion and maybe more from failed bankers and other fraudulent financiers to the pocketbooks of the innocent American masses; they are THREATS from the wealthy against the workers: comply with our demands or we will bury you as much as the system permits.
I say: ENOUGH!!! This is supposed to be a government of the people, for the people, and by the people, not of the many, for the few, and by the corrupted. If you have any semblance of a conscience, you will not vote for this bailout. You will work towards a solution that values justice over convenience. It may seem more convenient to stick this collosal trainwreck on the backs of American workers, but it is the antithesis of justice!
Grassley and Harkin. Both had someone in the office who stated that they are going to do what's best for Iowa. I don't have a lot of love for Grassley but I think he will not back the bushies on this one. And I am about 99.9 pct. sure that Harkin won't back big business. He always looks out for the people back home. Preparing to call Braley right now. We're gonna win this round. The people are speaking up.
or I should say lack of flood relief. Cedar Rapids is going to take years to rebuild and they could use some federal help. But that's another story for another time. I honestly believe that ol' Chuck is going to make sure we commoners are taken care of, or at least make sure there is some oversight.
56. I've already contacted my own
representatives; I know at least one has some serious misgivings. I'm almost tempted to send all of them a couple of boxes of tea just to really make the point. Maybe that really wouldn't be a bad idea! I remember thousands of people sending tea bags to their reps quite a few years ago when Americans were generally pissed that Congress planned on giving itself a raise while holding down the minimum wage and voting against consumer protection bills. They were "dripping with bitterness", as many described it (boo fucking hoo), but they got the message and voted down the pay raise. This time, it's so much more important and there's so much more at stake. Perhaps it's time for another such message?
I mean honestly, if I had "loaned" 10k to a guy with no job, no assets, and bad credit would anyone pity me, or want to "bail me out"?
House Republicans expressed skepticism about the administration’s plan for bailing out Wall Street during a closed-door meeting with Vice President Cheney and other administration officials Tuesday.
Lawmakers leaving the hour-and-a-half-long meeting said Cheney was told that the plan lacked the details they needed to grant swift approval for the Treasury to be given $700 billion to purchase failing mortgage-related securities from banks and other financial institutions.
“Just because God created the world in seven days doesn't mean we have to pass this bill in seven days," said Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas). Barton said he did not appreciate being told he had to vote for legislation with only one week to review complicated terms with which he was not familiar.
In the Senate, some Republicans said they also had doubts about the plan.
Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) said he has not yet made a decision but is hearing “all negative” feedback from voters in Utah about Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson’s plan.
“Secretary Paulson is a very bright guy with a lot of experience in the financial world, and I always want to listen to whatever he's suggesting. But I'm concerned about it,” Hatch said. He added that his Utah constituents are telling him “not to support that $700 billion bailout. They look at it as a bailout.”
Keel dialing, folks!
