New Lincoln penny designs unveiled
New Lincoln penny designs unveiled

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- For the first time in 50 years, the U.S. penny is getting redesigned, announced the U.S. Mint Monday. While the coin will continue to depict President Lincoln's likeness on the front, the reverse side will will bear one of four new designs.

The four new coins depict the life of the 16th president: the Kentucky log cabin of his birth, his youth working as an Indiana rail splitter, his service at the State Capitol in Illinois, and his work to unify the country as depicted by a half-finished image of the U.S. Capitol dome.

The first of the coins debuts on Feb. 12, 2009, with the others following in three-month intervals. The release date coincides with the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birth and comes a century after the production of the original Lincoln cent.

The Lincoln cent was first issued on Aug. 2, 1909 in honor of Abraham Lincoln's birth, 100 years earlier. It was the first circulating coin to not only feature a real person but to feature a United States president.

8. First CIRCULATING coin with a president on it, correct
George Washington appeared with LaFayette on a commemoreative silver
dollar in 1900, and the recently assassinated President William McKinley
appeared on a commemorative gold dollar in 1903, but neither coin was
intended for circulation, although many of the Lafayette dollars ended
up circulating anyway.
