. . .with an attack on the New York Times :rofl:from TPM:
http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/09/mccain_campaign_slams_new_york.phpOn a conference call with reporters today, Rick Davis said only that he was involved in an effort to promote the cause of home-ownership -- but that he wasn't actually a lobbyist. "I never lobbied a single day," Davis said -- a claim that seems at odds with a Fannie exec's claim to the paper that they were giving Davis huge amounts of money on the chance that McCain might become president.
Then Steve Schmidt, the campaign's chief operating officer, aggressively took on the Times.
"Whatever the New York Times once was, it is not today by any standard a journalistic organization," Schmidt said. "It is a pro-Obama organization that every day attacks Senator McCain, attacks Governor Palin, and excuses Senator Obama."
from Mother Jones:
http://www.motherjones.com/mojoblog/archives/2008/09/9835_mccain_new_york_times_targets_schmidt_davis.htmlRick Davis, John McCain's campaign manager, and Steve Schmidt, a top McCain strategist, were asked about a New York Times article reporting that Davis had been paid nearly $2 million for running a Washington outfit set up by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to stop stricter regulation of these two entities. Davis said he had never engaged in any lobbying for that group and downplayed Fannie and Freddie's role in the organization. He joked that he appreciated "all the exposure I get" in The New York Times. He added that the newspaper must have "Davis envy."
from Ben Smith's blog:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/politico/20080922/pl_politico/21858The campaign manager, Rick Davis, responded more directly to the charge, saying McCain had opposed Fannie Mae even as he worked for a coalition that included the corporation . . .
