Atlanta gas crunch: 'We've got no gas here'
Source: CNN

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Mohammed Hussain got 3,000 gallons of gas delivered to his Chevron station in suburban Atlanta on Saturday. By Sunday morning, all of the gas, priced at $4.39 per gallon for regular unleaded, was gone.

"We're dry. We've got no gas here," Hussain, the station's manager, said Monday morning.

He said he has "no idea" when the next shipment will come, even though he's been in constant contact with the local terminal.

"It could be days," he said. "Obviously, we're disappointed. We're being patient. That's all we can do."

Anyone DUers out in Georgia experience this?

1. It's been spotty up here in the northern 'burbs.
I passed a station that was open, looked at my fuel gauge, saw I was 2/3 full and had one of those "am I going to be part of the problem?" internal monologues.

I decided not to fill up. Hope this doesn't bite me when I'll really need to fill up on Wednesday evening.

29. They ARE empty!
How many gas stations can afford to stay open with no gas to sell? I think plenty of people only stop in for gum and crap when they can also get gas.

I saw one open this morning but I bet it's out by now.

16. You bet they do. The military is the single largest user of fossil fuels in the US.

the air force is the worst...

http://www.peak-oil-news.info/military-oil-usage-statistics/

The United States Military is the the world’s largest fuel-burning entity. More than half of the defense department’s fuel budget is spent on fueling the U.S. Air Force. The Navy consumes about one third of defense oil resources and the Army uses around 12%. 25% of military energy is used to power and heat buildings and facilities - the remaining 75% is consumed for mobility purposes. This article gives a detailed breakdown of how much oil the military machine consumes.

5. There seems to be enough in Greensboro, NC but
in Asheville, NC it's a totally different story. The one station I found that had gas had a 2-hour wait and cops were directing traffic. My mom said that on the other side of town fights had broken out from people trying to cut in line.

It would be interesting to hear from other cities.

12. I thought the other day my nearest gas station got a supply of gas...
... but I was mistaken. It's decided to not get any gas any more. All the pumps are plastic-bagged and the sign indicating how much gas would be has no numbers on it. It's a pretty new gas station too.

Greensboro I bet is OK because of the fact that it has a major "tank farm" - where the tanker trucks themselves go to fill up.

6. Hell, we've got a Guv, a couple of Senators and....
...and a bunch of idiot Republican Congressmen (can you say Lynn Westmoreland and Jack Kingston?) that have been sucking the kernels out of George Bush's and Dick Cheney's asses for eight years, why in hell can't we get some damn gasoline?

7. Nashville area is also very short.
AAA claims that 50-60% of stations in the greater Nashville area do not have gas. My personal experience says that it is more like 80%. There is usually one station in my area that has gas, and the lines are often an hour long. It is supposed to ease up by the end of the week.

8. Yep
I'm in Mt Juliet, and I have to drive miles just to find a station with only Premium left. It's bad out here in Nashville.

10. Gonna take a while
89% of crude oil production in the gulf still shut in. 2.2 million barrels of refining capacity still shut down.
http://www.oe.netl.doe.gov/docs/2008_SitRep_15_Ike_092208_12PM.pdf

PS: IIRC US strategic reserve is crude, so no help for gasoline shortage.

Edited on Mon Sep-22-08 08:07 PM by unapatriciated
all of the gas stations within a 20 mile radius are out.
Hopefully they will get their deliveries by mid week.
I'm off for two days and am staying put till then.

edited to add... I had a customer yesterday that said he just got back from the Gulf, where he was filming for the Weather Channel. He told me that it was a hoax and that all the refineries were up and running.
I questioned him about it but he didn't give much details just said "I was there and they are up and running".
Has anyone else heard this?

13. I'm inspired. Just went out and filled my tank to be sure for the morning.
Of course, I'm much further north, but they'll take any excuse to jack the prices up, even if there's still lots to sell.

14. Asheville, NC is more than short.....
It's very hard to find gas around here. I know people who can't get to work, if they've gotten to work don't have the gas to get home. A couple of these people are one paycheck away from foreclosure. It's bad. The FED EX trucks won't be able to deliver soon -- they don't have their own gas tanks around here. I'm guessing once FED EX has a fit maybe we'll start getting some. I called the governor's office this morning -- they have gas in eastern NC (though Charlotte has had some lines) -- in western, not so much. They better do something soon! The gov's office were belatedly considering emergency deliveries. Folks, this will cause more foreclosures around here if they don't act fast!

18. I'm well out to the West of Atlanta and there is very little gas here either.
I can get to Alabama about as fast as I can downtown Atlanta, faster if it's rush hour.

All of the big stations are out of gas, managed to find a small Texaco station with two pumps that still had some regular.

Luckily we only average about 25 miles per day and our car gets good mileage, the $20 we put in should take us past the end of the week.

I have three more gallons in the can for the mower, that will go in the car this weekend if there isn't more gas in the stations by then.

After that I charge up the cordless drill and scout the neighborhood for jacked up SUVs and pickups.

...who have been orbiting the area in search of fuel. Regular seems available everywhere I've seen.

Thank goodness the hybrids take regular.

20. Anyone know why the two higher grades are experiencing shortages?
It's the same thing here in South Central Kentucky. Plenty of 87 but they've been out of mid-grade & premium for well over a week.

21. Just a guess...
Could it be that the large engines that require higher grades are simply less fuel-efficient, and maybe that those vehicles have larger gas tanks?

They're up and running but they're not releasing the gas because they want to get their loss claims approved.

31. Wealthiest country in the world
And we have people fighting each other in the street for a tank of gas. All this under the republican watch. This is yet another classic example of how the republicans cannot effectively govern. They are just useless.
