I hear Johnny McCain is going to be the chaperon. I wonder if they'll get to stop in the bus on the way home and get ice cream.

Maybe they'll even get to see famous people. Wouldn't that be something? I bet we'll hear aaaaaalllll about it when Sarah and Todd go sit and visit with Joe Biden in a few weeks. That Joe. He knows just about everybody. But maybe Sarah and Todd will see someone he hasn't. Wouldn't *that* be something?!?

Oh gee.

I remember my own field trip the UN. It was in 1958 or 1959. I'm not quite sure now. We got to see that special green marble in the General Assembly Room. And that swoopy roof on the place. Wow. But our big thrill came when we passed Dag Hammarskjoeld in the corridor. Dag Hammarskjoeld himself! We had only read about him in Current Events class and seen him on television before that. Golly!

We were also thrilled when we passed "Freedomland" on our way back home.

And sure enough, we stopped at one of the brand new Connecticut Turnpike's rest areas for ice cream.

Anyway, I sure hope Todd and Sarah have as much fun at the UN as we did.

By Golly!

5. "sarah and todd`s most excellent adventure"...
in 1958 my family went to washington dc and we stayed a whole week! we walked to every major government building and monument. in 1959 we traveled to a major southern country for over a week where we experienced many exciting sights and sounds. although we saw many people who were less fortunate than us they seemed "happy" and "polite". in 1959 the southern states were a foreign country

so summing up my qualifications i think i have enough to b a republican vice president

6. Do you think her mom
had to sign a permission slip for her to be away on an overnight trip? You know that New York is a big scary city. I hope little Sarah doesn't get lost. She does have grampa to help show her around so I think she'll be ok, Don't you? :sarcasm:

7.  I went on my field trip to the UN when I was 9, in 1960.

As a souvenir I purchased a carved gazelle from Kenya. Does that mean I can become Vice President too?

Freedomland? I LOVED Freedomland!

10. Freedomland .....
I threw that in as an insider thing to see who commented on it.

It is now a high rise apartment complex.

14. Yes, it's Co-op City. I lived about a half hour from there in Queens and went several times.
Edited on Tue Sep-23-08 08:05 AM by OmmmSweetOmmm
I saw The Four Seasons there and Steve & Edie too!

Freedomland closed in 1964 and now with an adult insight, I wouldn't be surprised if the World Fair helped bring about its demise.

The 1964 World's Fair was about 20 minutes from my home, walking distance and I can't even count how many times I went there.

25. The World's Fair .... yup. I went there quiet a few times, too.
We drove in from Connecticut a few times. It was almost as much fun as driving to Port Chester, a few years later, to drink.

26. I didn't realize that Connecticut had a higher drinking age back then. I could drink
at 18, but rarely did.

You probably went to Rye Playland a bunch to speaking of Portchester? I always feel as if I'm going backward in time when I go there.

12. Freedomland was great!
For awhile, my family lived in the apartment complex that was built on Freedomland's grounds.
And I also visited the UN in 1960, with my 6th grade class.
But you can't be Vice President just because you bought something from Kenya. You need to actually see a foreign country from your house, or it doesn't count.

It was brand new and absolutely beautiful. I think we learned more on that trip than Sarah knows now.

Dag Hammarskjold

The United Nations Headquarters is a distinctive complex in New York City that has served as the headquarters of the United Nations since its completion in 1950. It is located in the Turtle Bay neighborhood, on the east side of Midtown Manhattan, on spacious grounds overlooking the East River. Though it is in New York City, the land occupied by the United Nations Headquarters is considered "international territory", and its borders are First Avenue west, East 42nd Street south, East 48th Street north and the East River east.<1> FDR Drive passes underneath the Conference Building of the complex.

The United Nations Headquarters were constructed in New York City in 1949 and 1950 beside the East River, on seventeen acres of land purchased from the foremost New York real estate developer of the time, William Zeckendorf. This purchase was arranged by Nelson Rockefeller, after an initial offer of placing it on the Rockefeller family estate of Kykuit was rejected as being too isolated from Manhattan. The $8.5million purchase was then funded by his father, John D. Rockefeller, Jr., who donated it to the City.<2> The lead architect for the building was the real estate firm of Wallace Harrison, the personal architectural adviser for the family.

Another interesting item:
San Francisco, Chicago, Philadelphia, Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens, and even the Black Hills of South Dakota were all proposed as sites for the United Nations Headquarters before Manhattan was finally decided upon. It was later revealed that France, the UK and the Netherlands voted against situating the headquarters in the United States.

I wish I were making that headline up, but it's a real AP headline. :eyes:

Reminds me of the book about Chimpy, "My First Presidentiary."
