18. No. As of 2:00 the NHC stated that the system has the potential to become
a tropical depression:

1. SATELLITE PICTURES INDICATE THAT THERE HAS BEEN LITTLE CHANGE WITH
THE BROAD AREA OF LOW PRESSURE CENTERED NEAR THE EASTERN DOMINICAN
REPUBLIC DURING THE PAST SEVERAL HOURS. HOWEVER...SURFACE PRESSURES
ARE FALLING IN THE AREA...AND UPPER-LEVEL WINDS ARE MARGINALLY
CONDUCIVE FOR ADDITIONAL DEVELOPMENT. THIS SYSTEM HAS THE POTENTIAL
TO BECOME A TROPICAL DEPRESSION AT ANY TIME DURING THE NEXT DAY OR
TWO AS IT MOVES SLOWLY TO THE NORTH OR NORTHWEST AWAY FROM
HISPANIOLA. HEAVY RAINFALL WITH POTENTIALLY LIFE-THREATENING FLASH
FLOODING IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE OVER THE AREA THROUGH TOMORROW.
INTERESTS IN PUERTO RICO...THE VIRGIN ISLANDS...HISPANIOLA...THE
TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS...AND THE SOUTHEASTERN BAHAMAS SHOULD
CONTINUE TO MONITOR THE PROGRESS OF THIS SYSTEM AND PRODUCTS ISSUED
BY THEIR LOCAL WEATHER FORECAST OFFICES. AN AIR FORCE RESERVE
RECONNAISSANCE PLANE IS CURRENTLY INVESTIGATING THE SYSTEM.

7. Sometimes ya just have to laugh
After Katrina our neighbors aluminum toolshed ended up in the trees behind our house. In several pieces. They live 150 yards north of us. Nobody in the neighborhood was hurt but it took along while to clean up everthing.

5. I guess it's hard to predict this far out.
I was watching it to see if it would hit us here in NC but now it's coming in farther north it looks like.

6. Looks more like Massachusetts to me from that map
But it is way to early to tell. It does seem likely that it is going straight north though.

8. Well I said NY "area" because it could come in anywhere around there.
Edited on Tue Sep-23-08 10:30 AM by Lex
Obviously the area is highly populated.

A bit of a wobble and it changes course by 200 miles.

It's not predicted to be even as much as a Cat 3, but it bears watching by all in that area.

Edited to add: I changed the OP to add in most all the states in case people didn't understand.

10. thanks for the heads up!
I usually keep close eye on tropics, but during these past two weeks, I've been watching all other potential problems. Can't keep up.

11. A good storm surge from even a small storm would flood most of lower manhattan.

12. OK, maybe say NY/New England?
Since that should cover everywhere that may be affected. Or it could affect the mid-Atlantic. Or it could hit nobody. Argh.

13. It's so hard to tell this early on.
But people in anywhere in that area should be watching.

20. Yeh I read that it could become a tropical storm or a
hurricane. Fugg there are places in Texas, Louisiana and Ohio where people still don't have power.

22. To add yet more sweetness and light to this fine discussion board today:
That track is perilously close to another of the hazards management nightmare scenarios (major hurricane hitting NYC -- it could kill thousands and wreck a good bit of the US economy all by itself, no deregulation needed).

Hey, we've seen NO sunk, Galveston destroyed. Why not drown NYC, have Ranier unleash some lahars, shake San Francisco to the ground, and, I dunno, get hit by an asteroid or something? There are times when things are so unbelievably fucked you have to just laugh at them.

Very bitter laughter.
