I cannot believe that the sky is gonna fall if we take a few days and think this over. After all, the dood that's telling us he needs $700Billion and a free rein to do anything he wants with it is the exact same asshat that a month ago was telling us everything was hunkydorey. I'm supposed to trust HIM?

I would add that I've heard no real talk of penalties or punishment for those who got us into this mess, which to me seems like it should be a central element. If the people responsible don't hafta pay a substantial price then you bet that this will happen again, regardless of the number or type of regulations in place. I probably will anyway, but if we're so hot and heavy to throw a poor kid from the projects in jail for a rock then we damn well oughta be tossin these thieves in the slammer their grand theft. I also like Bernie Sanders quip that if an institution is too large to fail then it's too large to exist.

He wants the Democrats to pass some kind of bail-out legislation (never mind the details) so he and his pals can bash away at them for passing bail-out legislation. He's just laying a marker down here, so that later he can say he was against a bail out the whole time. Of course, if no legislation is passed, and another major financial institution goes the way of Lehman Brothers, then Newt can get all huffy about how the Democrats did nothing.
