Why is this race even close?
Even if there's a difference of a few points, why is McPalin even on the map?

John McCain is the worst campaigner I have seen in my entire life. "The fundementals of our economy are strong"; the constant "what he meant"; the seven houses; the deregulation record; the outright lies which he's actually getting called on; the VP who seems to be a walking manifestation of corruption, evil and outright batshit insanity; the warmongering; the brief hinting at hostilities with Russia and later, Spain (Spain? Really?); the constant reversals; the Keating Five and on and on.

OK fine, there's a certain amount of racism in this. I don't like that but I recognise it exists but I'd always imagined that the majority of the racists would be die-hard Republicans anyway. About a quarter of the country are batshit insane fundementalists (not coincidently, about a fifth of the country believes the sun orbits the earth) so you can write those off as die-hard Rethuglicans. Fine. Write off perhaps another ten percent to racism, not fine but ok, that's about 35-40% of the electorate.

So why the hell isn't the entire rest of the country backing Obama? OK, he's not perfect and parts of his record make me wince but he's miles better than McPalin so why is this election even within sniffing distance? Has half your country gone completely fucking tonto?

1. Racism
Edited on Tue Sep-23-08 04:33 PM by Double_Talk_Express
Racist Dems (don't pretend they don't exist) in the rust belt who let's face it -- supported Hillary and would have supported her if she was the nominee...would never support a black man so they'd rather bite the bullet and vote for McSame.

3. Sadly, it may just come down to that. I was giving the public too much credit in my post.

6. Oh, I know they exist
I was just hoping they were a tiny, tiny minority, like black Klansmen or rational Republicans.

8. That, and the fact that it's easier to TELL lies than to DEBUNK them.
Remember:

"Guys like you are in what we call 'the reality-based community,' which is people who believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality. That's not the way the world really works anymore. "We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you're studying that reality – judiciously, as you will – we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. We're history's actors . . . and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do."

-- Bush aide to reporter Ron Suskind

2. I guess part of it may be what Bill Maher said. "The American people are too stupid to be governed.

They are very easily misled, and in many cases too lazy to find out the facts.
Willful ignorance is an epidemic.
It is very, very sad.
I saw this today...and it typifies this train of thought...

7. It doesn't make any sense. I actually don't believe it is as close as we are made to believe.
I know for sure that some people are genuine McCain supporters, because I have seen them with my own eyes and I know they do exist. But, I do not believe there are as many McCain voters as we are told there are.

Just as McCain exaggerates the size of his crowds, the polls are inflating his numbers. This is done in hopes that Republicans can steal the election again. However, this time it won't work because the numbers aren't close enough to get away with stealing it.

17. Pollsters have little motivation to "inflate" his numbers as they'll look like fools on election day
But I agree, I think Obama's support is stronger than it appears. I wonder about how the partisan breakdown is being balanced. Something like that.

I was in Bethesda's Obama office this afternoon. Very busy!

23. POLLING FRAUD MUST PRECEDE ELECTION FRAUD.
In order for the theft to be able to be carried out, it must appear to be close.

It would not look so plausible if ObamaBiden are winning by a landslide all along, and then suddenly, McSame and the barracuda win.

26. That said, why is DU wasting so much time on hating Clinton, etc.
Instead of doing the good work of ferreting out election fraud? Because we, like most everyone else, are sheeple with no original thought. Jaysus Mehry and Jooseph! (channelling Irish great-grandmother)

11. Sen. Obama Answered This Last Week
during his interview for 60 Minutes, I believe. He said that he is running against a "Republican Machine". I call them REPUBLICAN ORGANIZED CRIME. That includes the media. I listen to NPR, which is supposedly fair, and I hear them failing to counter any falsehoods mentioned in their interviews (in an effort to appear BALANCED, maybe?)

Most Americans listen to the M-S media, which is owned by.....They don't even have an inkling that the information they receive is slanted. Then, there's talk radio, racism, blatant ignorance.....

In order to learn the truth, you have to do your own research. A lot of people don't bother. They're asleep, and unwilling to listen to an opposing viewpoint. I know, because I was one of the sleepy ones, until my candidate lost the primary, and I started to pay close attention to who was left in the field. Now, I will pay attention, and teach my children about politics, so we can be responsible citizens.

13. Racists weren't going to vote for him anyway. He lost a lot of white, male votes after Rev. Wright.
Edited on Tue Sep-23-08 05:05 PM by MookieWilson
His numbers flat-lined after that and he crawled across the finish line. He's never generated a lot of blue-collar appeal. That's why Clinton won the Big Blue States.

He needs to broaden his demographic.

Neither he nor McCain have the resumes we're used to from presidential candidates.

I cannot imagine ANY reason to vote for McCain unless you dislike both and think you'll get McCain for only four years rather than Obama for eight.

19. Racism....Racism.....Racism
I know at least 10 Democrats who voted for Kerry and are not likely to vote for Obama because of Race. It is sickening but it is real. I also, however, know several moderate Republicans who voted for Bush twice and quite a few younger folks who have never voted before who will be voting for Obama. If young folks vote in large numbers Obama will win. Will they? I have no clue but the election is in their hands.

25. 33% of democrats have "problems" with African Americans, when asked
Edited on Tue Sep-23-08 06:14 PM by LaPera
and probably will NOT vote for a Black man for president, not to mention most of the tens of millions of republicans and millions of Independents (undecided) will most likely not vote for a black Dem candidate....Along with republican vote stealing all over the country and republican owned electronic voting machines....It will be extremely difficult for Obama.

But since day one people here at DU can't see anything but an Obama win, simply because they want it and think all will be fair and Obama will cruise...they think it's just magically going to happen...they pitifully watch the manipulated polls each day like that is going to tell them something...like it's odds in Vegas for a football game....How old are these people, novices! 20's or 30's pontificating as if they think they really been around & know it all....Even Joe Biden said it's going to be difficult road in Ohio a very important swing state.... they will spit on you if you even question Obama not winning....talk about having their heads in the sand!
