I know why I don't like the new Greatest Pages.
Edited on Wed Sep-24-08 08:58 AM by The Backlash Cometh
It's as static as a newspaper. It has that feeling that it's ready for the birdcage after you've seen it once, because nothing moves and it's just too much trouble looking through it all to see if new threads popped up somewhere in the middle, since the last time you looked. Your mind has already observed what's there, and you're hungry for more, but you don't know where to go because you don't have the time to sift through the latest pages. And then you're left needing to bookmark everything, just in case it doesn't make the two highest ratings.

I'm just wondering, if the newspapers failed, why would DU want to come up with a blog with something that is just like it?

18. I do miss that.
It helped in seeing what was new. Now I have to dig more.

Though not with such humorous results.

4. perhaps the 24 hours/5 days split needs retooling
for greatest page junkies, something more like 4 hours/24 hours might work better.
but that's not for everybody.

what would be really cool would be if there were settings so that you could choose between longer and shorter intervals.

7. Oh, I do like longer and shorter.
So that first timers, or people who are really busy in their lives and can only come in once a day, can see all the most important threads of the day and not miss anything, and the rest of us newsjunkies can keep the brainstorms churning in a live feed that we're use to.

8. I feel the same way. I've always looked at the latest first to see what is new
The Greatest Page has stuff that has been there yesterday. The Greatest Page for the last 24 hours looks essentially exactly like the Greatest Page for the last 7 days.

I like the new rating system but they should bring the latest page back with the newest threads rated up by 10 or more appearing at the top

That was our strength. We could actually see what was affecting everyone because the dynamics of the threads kept changing.

11. Why is there no "Worst Post Ever" choice?
Kidding. It'll just take awhile to get used to it and the "Disruptive" option is excellent freeper bait.

12. And that's another thing, In order for this thread to be rated down from
Must Read to Reccomended, someone actually had to take the time to down rate it, even though 6 people have already given it favorable ratings. It feels like the same kind of manipulation that goes on in a newspaper.

14. And still another point.
There are so many "Must Reads" on the Greatest page, that you can't find any "Recommended" threads. Does that mean that I would have to go to the General Discussion Forum to even find this thread quickly?

17. I'm missing that "Latest Greatest" column from the old Greatest Page.
I like the new format, but I hope there's a way to bring back that sense of notable articles getting attention in real-time.

19. Agreed.
When I'm short on time I like to see what has just made it to the Greatest Page. Now it's very static. I like the ranking system but I can't find the middle-ranked ones.

Which, kind of is funny since they're the local papers.

23. YES! I was going to post this...
The left column of the old greatest page was one of my anchors here. The "latest" page is not the same. The ratings are now ambiguous because (I think) they do not show real time interest in the topic. This is a step backward. Added complexity with less real information.
