WI Attorney General Battles State Over Voter Registration Checks
Kate Klonick - September 23, 2008 - http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/09/wi_attorney_general.php

As the presidential election nears, and Wisconsin proves itself to once again be a battleground state, J.B. Van Hollen, the state attorney general and co-chair of the Wisconsin McCain campaign, is raising the specter of voting fraud.

Van Hollen filed suit earlier this month, against the state Government Accountability Board (GAB) which oversees elections in Wisconsin, demanding that they verify all of the voter registrations made since January 2006 against a new state database created under the federal Help America Vote Act (HAVA) -- a Herculean task that the board had decided to forgo with just six weeks to go until the election.

The GAB claims to be in full compliance with HAVA, stating that retro-active voter registration checks through the database are not mandated by federal law.

The database compares registration data with drivers license records. ............

1. I have no idea why he's doing this..we have
same day registration here and if anyone gets kicked off, they can take two pieces of i.d. that shows where they live to the polling place, fill out a registrations and then vote. He's wasting tax payer dollars.

3. because many will give up and go back to work without voting
If you wait in line to vote for an hour and get up to the front only to be turned away for some bullshit reason, would you go back and start over. I know those of us at DU are dedicated and would do it but many people won't and with it expected to be close turning away even a few helps them. Also, there will be those that will be scared off by all the talk about this and decide voting is too much of a hassle.

2. He only got elect due to our open primary
the republican's crossed over in droves during the primary to elect the weakest of the two democrats running for the position. I even heard little old ladies twittering about crossing in the hallway after they voted.
