I just watched Moore's Slacker Uprising....

For as funny as the movie was - and Moore was hysterical dealing with Republican plants in his audiences - I felt a tremendous sadness throughout.

Too see the youth in this country rise up and try to shape their own future by voting Bush out of office was awesome (the youth vote was the only age group Kerry won). The energy and enthusiasm in city after city that Moore visited reminded me how desparately we all wanted to get the criminal out of office, and how hard we all worked. Knowing how the movie would end, though, was bitter. It brought back all of the horrors of election night 2004.

Some might wonder why Moore released this film about the 2004 election *now*. I think it's a warning shot that elections aren't won simply by voting yourself - you have to get out and grab everyone you know and get them to the polls. You have to walk precincts and phone bank and drive people on election day. You need to be educated on the issues. You have to care about your country. That's what Moore preached to audience after audience and the message is just as urgent this year as it was in 2004. He leaves unsaid the consequences of Bush being returned for four more years - he doesn't have to. We see them every day.

My only criticism of the film is that, after all of the work the 'slackers' did to register voters and work prior to the election, he doesn't address why they should go through this again in 2008. A word of encouragement to keep them from becoming cynical about the process might have been a good way to end the film. Or maybe he gives them credit for being smart enough to know. In any event, it was worth the long run time (it seemed close to two hours).
