Does anyone else miss the "greatest" being sorted by time and being able to tell
where you left off reading if you leave your computer for an hour or so. There's no way to do that at this point.

I don't like this system. I never got Greatest page very often, and seldom if ever thought about it.

I concentrate more on writing a good post, but I do resent having a post marked down because it is a video of Howard Dean.

It shows divisions here.

28. I don't know exactly how it works.
My post of the Dean interview in the video forum had just hit greatest with about 7 votes, I think.

I know it was there, then it was not.

Then it was marked downward..I think...from Must Read to Recommend.

There is no doubt the interview was good, so that could not have been the reason.

26. I share your concern about "skip it"
I think some people will abuse it and mark down threads because they have a personal axe to grind with the poster or the content.

IMO, it's important to be an objective movie reviewer with this new system. For example, if a critic knows he dislikes the genre of Westerns and he's reviewing 3:10 To Yuma, he should acknowledge that (for example) the acting and scenery are excellent and that fans of Westerns will love it.

A bad critic will just say "it sucks, skip it".

I just rambled that out but hopefully you get the idea.

29. Yes, I agree.
Many have an ax to grind with some politicians and with posters like me who wrote about the primary problems in Florida. Some disagree but show respect, others will never forget that I called names during the primary.

It's sad, but things are so heated that there will be abuse.

When I saw the "skip it" appear on my post about the Gospel Today magazine with women pastors on the front...it really hit me hard.

It worries me...that potential of inserting personalities.

I like the new rating system, except for the "skip it" and "disruptive" parts. Why open individuals up for targeted abuse like that? And why even have the disruptive option when we have an alert button?

BTW, I rated your Gospel magazine story a "must read." Hopefully that will cancel out the "skip it".

I used to use the GP as my primary "forum." I saw all kinds of stuff there, the best of the best, but also a lot of stuff that only had, maybe, 10 votes but it was interesting to me, and always got another vote from me. Now I'll actually have to go into each forum to search for those gems which will take a lot more time. I like the new way to rate, but instead of having the week's best, maybe having "Must Read" and "Recommended" reading would be better, or a link up top to the "Recommended" threads. I also like the idea someone else suggested here, maybe moving the Week's Best to another page.

I also really miss the sorting by time and the being able to see quickly where I left off--I used the GP that way all the time.

Edited to add: thankfully, this was on the bottom of the new GP - the last post on the page - or I never would have seen it.

Otherwise I'm good. I especially like being able to recommend something and staying on the same page. So much nicer than having to hit the "back" button and then the "view all" button so I can read the comments.

I swear, before, every time I recommended a post I ended up giving it half a dozen's worth of "views".

49. Another problem with the new system: lack of variety on the GP.
Edited on Wed Sep-24-08 04:00 PM by intheflow
People post the same stories in different forums (and sometimes in the same forum). So take for example the story about McCain wanting to cancel the debate. It's posted in LBN, GD, GDP, maybe there's even a version in Editorials and Politics/Campaigns. That's five versions of the same news item that could all get 25 votes for "must read". On a GP that only lists the 50 top rated stories, that one story takes up a disproportionate amount of space. It could be the biggest story of the year, but one story taking up a tenth of the GP crowds out a lot of other great stuff.

I now find the Greatest Page boring to read. I used to be able to get on and read at least 5-6 cool new posts every hour. Now, I find myself seeing the same threads over and over every time I get on. I don't really go in to a lot of the different forums to look at all of the posts. I liked coming here and seeing quickly what was going on.

I think the weekly greatest threads will even be worse, frankly. God knows politics is so fast-paced that many things posted on Mondays are already outdated by Tuesday evening. But to have them hang around for a week just because they were the craze on a particular day is, well, boring.

But I'd prefer the old school board as an option at least.

Another stupid feature is there are now side/side greatest threads-for the most part identical threads.Waste of space.

Yes I do.

I usually just read the newest ones to the greatest page every time I came to the page. Also I wish that you could get more than one page of greatest. I just hit recommend for this one - not realizing that you had to post it Must Read if you wanted it on the greatest page. It would be nice if there was a place to read the recommended threads as well.

Greatest is usually the only page I read - I don't bother to go into the individual forums unless it's the topic forums, so I prefer it to hold all the posts that people recommend even if it's not got quite as many recommendations as the very top ones.

Also, I'm afraid any posts I would start would get Skip It, then I'd never bother again to post : ( not that I do so much now anyway. Maybe have the skip it and disruptive be hidden even if they do affect the total rating.

66. I don't like it this way, at all (well, at least the majority of it)
I thought I did at first, because recommending something no longer causes the whole page to reload, which is a big consideration to us dialuppers.

HOWEVER....

A lot of things I'm interested in no longer make the Greatest (the five-and-ten-rec kind of things). I guess I could go to the individual forums, but I don't really want to, except in a few cases - I just want to see everything that even a few people found interesting.

The seven-day Greatest is wonderful, I must admit - I used to miss things if I wasn't on the computer every day.

On the other hand, I don't spend nearly as much time on DU with it this way, which may be a good thing - it got quite addictive at times, and I really ought to get off the computer more.

I also notice that not too many short statements make it to the Greatest now, and I used to enjoy them.

I really think I preferred just knowing how many people thought other people should take a look, and nothing else.

Before, DU seemed to me like a chat room with news, and now, it basically seems like just a news aggregator with a liberal bent. I guess I could go down and read the comments, but for some reason in the new format I don't. Maybe because by the time something gets on the new version of the Greatest and I see it, I figure it's already been talked out.

Not complaining, I guess - I *do* need to get off the computer more.

84. That's a great synopsis
that coincides with my own feelings.

And when someone says, I guess it's better that I don't spend as much time on you, it's not a great sign. (Especially when they're thinking: I wish you were still as rewarding as before.)

67. Thread
Edited on Wed Sep-24-08 06:22 PM by mbergen
I'm trying to figure out how to get back to the thread that said they were changing the rating system so I could comment there - I thought it would have been on the greatest page, but I can't find it. Also as others have said the page never changes - I don't have to check DU as often though I guess.

I guess I'll have to go through the latest forum first now instead of just greatest, though It's a lot to sort through - or maybe General Discussion rather than greatest - I think those sort by what is recent. Or, I wish in the latest forum you could set your preferences to filter out posts that are not either must read or recommended, then we'd sort of have the function of the old greatest page if we wanted it and wouldn't have to go through so many messages to find the new, good ones.

Editing to add, I found the thread about the rating system - I just sorted the general discussion by how many posts a thread had and it jumped to the top. If you can sort like that, I don't see why they couldn't make it so you could sort the latest page by rating (and show the ratings on latest) then we'd have what we want I think.

68. Doesn't "mark" mark all the posts up to when you mark them?
I've used that so I can see what is new when I return.

71. That works if you go into every forum. Many people don't have time for that, and
there are many days I don't go into the forums and only read what's on the greatest to try to catch up.

72. If you go to "discuss" link/page, it says "mark all". I did it by accident once
and had to get help to figure out what I did. It marks at least all the forums you have listed on the main "discuss" page.

It is particularly difficult to be without it at this particular moment when news is moving so quickly. I liked being able to hit the Greatest page when something hit and see immediately what was going on from the newly posted threads. Now all I see is old stuff :(

81. I agree. It was tough to sometimes have to wade through 12 "Greatest" OPs on the same topic ...
Edited on Wed Sep-24-08 09:24 PM by Fly by night
... but the old way certainly made it easier to keep up with breaking stories and to get a broad range of topics in front of us fast.

Maybe a solution would be to go back to the old way, but simply require more votes before an OP appears on the "Greatest" page. In my time here, we've gone from 3 to 5 recs -- how about going up to 8 or 10? That might help reduce some of the fluff and redundancy, and yet allow us the benefits of the "old school" way.

Just my two cents worth -- before the Wall Street bail-out reduces that to one red cent.

Go figure. k*r whatever that means.

86. I also find the new system to be not as useful to me.
I used the old system every day to find out which were the hot topics of that day. And I appreciated being able to see the posts both in chronological order and in order of most recommendations. Isn't there some way we could have BOTH the new system and a page with the old system, too? I don't know the tech behind all of this, but I definitely miss the old GP. :(

87. YES!!! I was using the greatest page like a "latest-best" page
and these new changes have ruined the experience for me

but

on the other hand

it sure is nice to see certain despicable people who used to litter the greatest page suddenly banished to the lower decks by the throngs of DUers who have grown to hate them

so that's kind of cool

91. Yes, that is how I read the posts on DU.
First I would go to the latest page and scroll through a couple of pages. Then I would go to the greatest page to see the threads that I might have missed that were highly recommended by the community.

I'm no fan of the changes they have made. I've seen some great threads rated 'average'. I don't want the DU turned into something that is trying to imitate dailykos.

Yeah, the new greatest page format blows. The same stories stay at the top of both pages forever. I liked being able to check in and see what was new at the top of the left column without having to scroll down. And down. And down. That said, I like the "skip it" function a lot.
