AP:McCain seeks to delay debate to focus on economy (says suspend in live news conf)
Edited on Wed Sep-24-08 02:27 PM by maddezmom
NEW YORK - Republican John McCain says he's directing his staff to work with Barack Obama's campaign and the debate commission to delay Friday's debate because of the economic crisis.

In a statement, McCain says he will stop campaigning after addressing former President Bill Clinton's Global Initiative session on Thursday and return to Washington to focus on the nation's financial problems.

McCain also said he wants President Bush to convene a leadership meeting in Washington. Both he and Obama would attend the session.

This statement from spokesman Bill Burton:

At 8:30 this morning, Senator Obama called Senator McCain to ask him if he would join in issuing a joint statement outlining their shared principles and conditions for the Treasury proposal and urging Congress and the White House to act in a bipartisan manner to pass such a proposal. At 2:30 this afternoon, Senator McCain returned Senator Obama’s call and agreed to join him in issuing such a statement. The two campaigns are currently working together on the details.

5. Excuse me, but wasn't this debate to be about domestic issues until McCain requested a change?
Edited on Wed Sep-24-08 02:12 PM by sinkingfeeling
No, guess it was both campaigns that agreed to change it.

The McCain and Obama campaigns announced this week that they have agreed to a change from initial plans that called for the UM-hosted event to focus on domestic issues. Instead, the first debate is to center on national security and foreign policy. The face-off on domestic issues is expected to take place Oct. 15 during the debate scheduled at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y.

"(The change in topics) was requested by both of the campaigns, and we are assuming it is related to the recent military conflict between Russia and Georgia as well as conversations going on with Iran," said Andy Mullins, executive assistant to the chancellor. "It seems foreign affairs have taken center stage, and the change in topics seems to reflect that." The university was alerted to the change just before 8 a.m. Thursday. The plan is to continue with the more than 50 debate-related events and 16 debate-centered classes scheduled this fall, which have been planned mainly around domestic issues.

7. I think it's more about this: McCain campaign manager's firm paid by Freddie Mac until bailout: repo
WASHINGTON — U.S. news reports are saying Republican John McCain's campaign manager is linked to a firm that was getting money from Freddie Mac, one of two housing giants now taken over by the government.

A person familiar with the financial arrangement tells The Associated Press that almost up to the time it was taken over, Freddie Mac paid $15,000 a month to the firm Davis Manafort.

AP says the payments continued until the past month or so.

6. full statement here:
McCain Calls for a Delay of Friday’s Presidential Debate
Republican presidential candidate John McCain is calling for delaying Friday’s scheduled debate against rival Barack Obama at the University of Mississippi in order for both senators to return to Washington D.C., to address the economic crisis. Below are McCain’s prepared remarks:

America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen.

Last Friday, I laid out my proposal and I have since discussed my priorities and concerns with the bill the Administration has put forward. Senator Obama has expressed his priorities and concerns. This morning, I met with a group of economic advisers to talk about the proposal on the table and the steps that we should take going forward. I have also spoken with members of Congress to hear their perspective.

It has become clear that no consensus has developed to support the Administration’s proposal. I do not believe that the plan on the table will pass as it currently stands, and we are running out of time.

Tomorrow morning, I will suspend my campaign and return to Washington after speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative. I have spoken to Senator Obama and informed him of my decision and have asked him to join me.

I am calling on the President to convene a meeting with the leadership from both houses of Congress, including Senator Obama and myself. It is time for both parties to come together to solve this problem.

We must meet as Americans, not as Democrats or Republicans, and we must meet until this crisis is resolved. I am directing my campaign to work with the Obama campaign and the commission on presidential debates to delay Friday night’s debate until we have taken action to address this crisis.

I am confident that before the markets open on Monday we can achieve consensus on legislation that will stabilize our financial markets, protect taxpayers and homeowners, and earn the confidence of the American people. All we must do to achieve this is temporarily set politics aside, and I am committed to doing so.

Following September 11th, our national leaders came together at a time of crisis. We must show that kind of patriotism now. Americans across our country lament the fact that partisan divisions in Washington have prevented us from addressing our national challenges. Now is our chance to come together to prove that Washington is once again capable of leading this country.
