Can I ask a dumb question?
I've heard/read a lot of people infer that the Republicans know that they are destroying the economy and that's what they want. They're not trying to save it, they're trying to kill it.

What I don't understand is what would they have to gain from this?

If we have another great depression, a bankrupt government, with soup kitchen lines, high unemployment, ... what do they gain from this? Is it simply that while the majority of people suffer in times like these, the rich are actually doing better? Or is there something else I'm missing?

1. An emergency would be a good excuse to throw out the Constitution altogether.
Do you think GWB has been ignoring the Constitution? A full-scale emergency would allow him or McCain to repeat Reagan's old line: "You ain't seen nothin' yet."

2. I think they wans to prevent any Dem from shoring up our social
programs. Things like Social Security, Medicare, & SCHIP. If there's NO MONEY, nothing can be done.

Remember the line "shrink gov't to a size where we can drown it in a bath tub"?

3. I don't believe
that they meant to destroy it. I think they let their greed get out of hand, tried to keep things together till the next administration got in to dump it in their lap, and failed. It will implode on their watch. What they use the occasion for is another matter altogether. Will it be shock doctrine tactics or no? Interesting times.

6. Fire sale prices on most everything in sight & they get to end the remaining New Deal programs.
No more Social Security, no more Medicare/Medicaid... it's the conservative's wet dream. They despise the social safety net.

7. It's not the Republics as a (w)hole,
just a select few of Poppy's cronies, who will make a KILLING. The vast majority of the Pubs are being gamed by their own Glorious Leaders--who know full well that the rank-and-file GOP operates in lockstep.

Poor fuckers. It would almost be sad if they didn't have this coming about ten times over!
