Political Power Play being used on the Democrats....
McCain voluntarily suspending his campaign in tandem with Bush addressing the nation as well his asking Obama to come to Washington puts pressure on the Democrats to cave to Paulsen's demands.

It also has the added pressure of "cancelling" the debates set for Friday...

They are scum.

3. I don't see the connection. How does any of those stunts put
pressure on the Dems "to cave to Paulsen's demands"?

5. What if the Dems call their bluff?
Let's say that nothing gets passed by Friday. Does McCain go to the debate anyway, even though he said he wouldn't? And what if Monday rolls around and the markets don't tank? The last shred of credibility they had goes out the window.

My suspicion is that if they are pretty close to a reasonable deal, the markets will stay in a holding pattern until it gets done, even if it isn't completed by Friday. What I find more astounding, and that no one seems to be commenting on, is how much the administration and the McCain campaign keep playing up the notion of a "Next Great Depression". It looks like they are more interested in spooking the markets, not settle them down.
