At least the Galveston residents have finally been allowed to
return home. Must be an election year.

Residents of Galveston Island, Texas, were returning to their homes Wednesday, almost three weeks after Hurricane Ike devastated Texas' Gulf Coast.
Galveston Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas testifies Tuesday on Capitol Hill about Hurricanes Gustav and Ike.

But living conditions will remain rough, city officials stressed at an afternoon news conference. Most residents will not have electricity for another month, City Manager Steve LeBlanc said.

"People need to assess their own personal situation," he said. "If they can tolerate these conditions, then they'll stay."

The return started early, with the only major highway leading onto Galveston Island backed up with cars in the predawn hours. Headlights stretched for miles. Video Watch cars line a road before dawn »

Residents of Galveston Island's heavily damaged west end were able to return Monday, but only to assess the damage and leave that evening.

City officials have warned residents returning Wednesday not to expect much in the way of services.

1. They still want them to leave, though
Bolivar residents get a look and leave on Friday as well, but they are being forced to leave again.

Thank you for keeping the hurricane information in the news, malaise. Too many DUers are as bad as the media, and seem to have forgotten about the victims. I guess the media blackout worked. :(

'represent' :D

I saw the look and leave for the Bolivar residents but at least they got to look and save some memories.
M$Greedia sure dropped this one.

3. Some 640,000 Texas customers still without power

More than 640,000 customers in Texas remained without power on Tuesday, 10 days after Hurricane Ike hit the Gulf Coast before cutting a destructive path all the way to New York.

CenterPoint Energy Inc (CNP.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), the power company for most of the Houston area, still had about 616,000 customers in Texas without power early Tuesday, down from 2.15 million at the height of the storm.

Last week, CenterPoint predicted its team of restoration workers would return power to most of the Houston area by Thursday. But the company could not estimate when it will return service to homes and businesses along the Gulf Coast, including Galveston, where the storm made landfall early on Sept. 13.
