The David Letterman of old returns in a big way
Edited on Thu Sep-25-08 12:02 AM by susanbanks44
I just watched The Late Show and was astonished at David Letterman's demeanor. The Letterman I witnessed tonight was the one I watched 20 some years ago. This video posted on DU:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjkCrfylq-E

in no way gives the 'drubbing' David displaying on tonight's episode!

Thank God and the Democratic Party that this man stood up against the McCain Machine.

My only advice to Mr. Letterman is this:

STAY THIS WAY. If McCain or Palin wants to come back to your show SNUB THEM LIKE THEY SNUBBED YOU!

P.S.

Keep Lyle the intern on your A-list! He is more reliable than McMetamucil

1. David has become much more "pointed" in his politics since harry came alone
Being a dad has focused him on what future there might be for his son ..Go Dave !!

7. Ah, not really
This was the David Letterman who chastised Cher, beat up Madonna.... The prick has returned. And the Olberman guest slot was definitely a shot at Rick Davis and the other goons in the camp!

and Oprah, etc.

14. Far from Moonves
The 'NBC Dave' was the one who attacked like a pit bull frothing at the mouth. Moonves hasnt been a regular sniper-shot for his humor. He has rarely stood up against anyone except maybe Oprah, but that was only to get her attention.

I don't think you've watched him much recently.

16. Seriously I have been a loyal
viewer of his since 1986. And I watch him on youtube almost daily. What I am trying to say is that he totally devoted his show to bashing McCain. I know that the "Great Moments In Presidential Speeches" is a common skit. I also know that Lyle the Intern makes a weekly appearance. With that being said I know that the Letterman of old (from NBC) has returned. If only he would stay this way and attack and IGNORE the right-wing loons who press for airtime on his show.

He caught McCain with his pants down tonight. The shot of the make-up person in studio with powder puff Katie Couric was priceless!!

25. And you are probably to young
to remember Letterman's rants about GE... Only youtube clips will help you be a "fan".

On another note go on a tour of the 30 rock and GE building. It will blow your mind at how small the studio of the old Letterman 'Late Night' show and SNL really are. My cousin used to work for NBC back in the 80s. I have had the chance to see Late Night and SNL (with Phil Hartman and the liberal Dennis Miller).

30. I totally love Letterman. Calling him a 'prick' is a compliment
that is how he got famous. Look at the Andy Kaufman, Crispin Glover, Cher, Madonna interviews for references.

35. Ummm OK. I have a dark sense of humor and
"prick" is one of those words that is exaggerated for comedic purposes. Letterman has been a hero of mine for over 20 years, remember when he was on after Carson? Yeah, I love Letterman.

IMHO, he should have gotten Carsons job on the tonight show instead of Leno.

42. See, Before tonight's show Letterman
was interviewed for Rolling Stone. He said in the interview that he would welcome Leno to his show once he was kicked off of The Tonight Show. Hearing that made me think that Dave had softened up too much. With age comes wisdom,I guess. And I agree he should have gotten Carson's job, Johnny thought so too.

4. Incredible!
That show was incredible to watch.

I can't believe how many valid points he made that aren't coming out in MSM- why can't Palin take over the campaign? Where was he a week ago? David went on and on, to the point that I was uncertain whether he shouldn't move on or not, but he kept getting miles out of it, throwing in a different joke here and there. The Top Ten was priceless.

He's been pretty scathing about the Republicans for a long time. I particularly love it because his studio audience is always full of red state tourists who need to hear this.

27. OMG I remember that... it was SO VILE
He didn't ask, he just saw some fabric in front of him, grabbed it, used it, didn't acknowledge her at all. It wasn't even funny, it was so imperial and vulgar and entitled....

Well, okay, yes, it was funny, the way Dave kept playing it. But I just can't believe that anybody seeing that clip would have ever voted for someone who would do that.

It's about 2 minutes long. He did this a few years ago:

Basically a laundry list of the political evils of the cheney white house.

...taken McCain owt. CNN ran with Chuck Schumer saying how weird this on McCain's part, I'm sure it's not the only place which has been pointing this out- and now for Letterman to say what everyone was thinking...Wow!

31. Whatever the past behavior, Letterman *destroyed* McCain tonight.
His comments asking why Palin couldn't just step-in for McCain, allowing the campaign to continue, was especially damaging. Letterman made it obvious that Palin's not ready, not able to step-in.

41. not letting Palin pick up the ball and run with the campaign
sends a message that mccain doesn't have confidence in her abilities or experience to take over for him...

if he's in the white house and becomes ill - would he suspend his presidency rather than turning over the reins to Palin????

if she can't handle answering questions from the media, if mccain doesn't have the confidence to let her campaign in his place - is she really ready to be VP?

39. Paul Shaffer, however, has gotten even more annoying; something I hadn't thought possible.

It's been 15 or so years since I last watched Letterman. Watched the YouTube video this morning and remembered why I had to quit. He's good, but Shaffer has always irritated the living hell outta me and ruins the whole thing. If anything, he's worse now than he was back when.

40. I saw them at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
inductions for U2 a few years back, he is one of the most talented musicians... Just watching Letterman over the years you know that his encyclopedia music mind is always on top of things. The banter back and forth with Dave doesn't bother me at all. Paul has been around for a long time, look at the early days of SNL and you will find him with a head full of hair playing like a madman.

43. I know how long he's been around. If he stuck to music, he'd be okay, because he is very

talented in that respect. I just don't think he's funny, and it's annoying to hear his voice & constant grating laughter when Letterman's talking.

I guess if it's worked for the show this long, I'm in the minority. But it doesn't matter. I can't get Letterman where I live anyway except via clips on the internets.

Paul is one of the main reasons I watch the show. I think he's hilarious. But these matters are entirely personal. I know people who love Ty Pennington, and if I ever saw him in real life, I'd have to kick him to death.
