Skinner, I still don't like this new feature........ |
|
for one thing, the 'flow' is just not the same (which used to be good)
EARLIER today, I really could not find, without going through a lot of trouble ~ back to page 6! for the day ~ the thread that I wanted to find. (Which was a current commentary about Paulson/Bernacke at the House today). Pretty important stuff.
Maybe this will be a GREAT feature, but PLEASE 'turn it off' for now. It's too close to the election, things are too critical/important right now. People need their news and their information without getting DOUBLY overloaded with having to learn something new.
Put it back to the 'way it was' and roll it out again after the election, please
Thanks for listening. M_Y_H

2. I don't like it either. |

Kudos for trying to make the board more interesting but this is distracting to me.
Delete it forever, please.

3. Ooh, I was just thinking about a feature request related to finding your way back. |
|

Now that there are two levels of voting up, you can vote that you like something without saying its something that everybody on DU should read. So I feel like I can use it liberally, which I like. But what we need is a "voting history" list on my DU for all the things we voted up. That way, when we see something interesting, we can vote it up a little without saying "must read" to everybody, and return to it later on My DU.
I know that could entail new tables in the database and such, but I think its well worth it because of what could come out of those voting record tables in the future. The coolest thing would be a "My Greatest" page, where where the posts most-voted-up by the people with voting histories most-like-you would be displayed to you, so it would be custom made to appeal to you. In the primaries that's where you could find the contraversial posts for your candidate that might be voted down on the greatest page by opponents, and when you are doing research here watching a topic not everybody else is watching, like energy or environment, you would be able to see the big stories voted up by people with interests like you that the rest of DU wouldn't be interested in (so it wouldn't be on the greatest page).

5. I don't like it because freepers can easily manipulate must reads by giving them skip it votes. |
|
Edited on Thu Sep-25-08 02:27 AM by TheGoldenRule
There should be a mechanism in place that if there are a set amount of must reads, then the thread becomes a must read automatically.
Otherwise, the freepers will go to town on this system and it's just not going to work.
Just look at this thread-it's got a skip it rating already.
Which proves my point that there are jerks around here that want to stir up shit and clamp down on freedom of speech. :grr:

it's OK to recommend, but I have real problems with potential for abuse of "skip it"

7. Add me to the list of those who don't like it. |
|
I feel that it is quite discouraging to the poster who gets few if any recs normally. It will also stifle those DUers with thin skins-basically keeping many of the newer/shyer DUers from even posting their thoughts for fear of getting 'skip-it' attached to their OP's.

8. it's too much of a hassle to recommend -- you can't just click & fly |
|
Edited on Thu Sep-25-08 02:52 AM by orleans
now you get a drop down menu and have to debate if you should click "must read" or "recommend"
i don't know why anyone would bother rating a thread "average"
and now this thread is getting a bunch of "skip it" votes?
on edit: and "disruptive" is usually used for alert.

10. I like the idea of waiting until after the election to try this out. |
|
I also agree that NOW may not be the best time to try to learn a new system. My main problem is with the new format for the Greatest Page. I can't find what I want easily there any more, and I can't figure out which are the newest and most timely posts there. I don't post a whole lot, but I read DU EVERY day -- several times a day, actually. I come here to find out what's being said about what's going on in the news each day, and that's of great value to me. When something hits the news cycle, DU is always the FIRST place I come to. And I often learn what's noteworthy for the day just by checking out what's on the Greatest Page. With the election so close, it's crucial to keep the information flowing swiftly and easily among us.

Since it got moved it is now tolerable--on the left side I hated it...

12. If a thread is important to you, there is the bookmark feature |
|
at the top left of the thread screen - "Bookmark this thread". It wouldn't seem a great idea to rely on other people recommending the threads you are interested in to get them into a list, under the old system or the new.

13. I'm finding myself already ignoring the ratings...... |
|
Sorry but I'm finding too many "must read" threads that I find inane and some that aren't getting them (despite a few votes) that I find much more interesting. So, not the first time I'm out of step with the majority! But I used to use the number of recs as a bit of a guide though I hardly "relied" heavily on it for what I'd choose to read -- I'm getting to the point with the new system that I just ignore the recommendations. Maybe that'll work itself out for me as people get used to the news system.
