"Harvey Milk Day" Proposal Outrages Conservatives

SACRAMENTO, CA - Conservative groups are calling on Gov. Schwarzenegger to veto legislation that would formally declare May 22 "Harvey Milk Day" in California.

The bill passed by lawmakers would encourage public schools to mark the day by commemorating the slain San Francisco supervisor's life and accomplishments. "I think it's very important to know who he was and what he means to people," said bill co-sponsor Assem. John Laird, D-Santa Cruz.

Milk was considered the first openly gay man to be elected to a major office when he became San Francisco supervisor in 1977. But his career and life were cut short. Milk was gunned down less than a year later in City Hall along with San Francisco Mayor George Moscone. The two were killed by a colleague, former supervisor Dan White. Conservative groups condemn the legislature's attempt to formally recognize Milk. They dismiss the bill as an attempt to promote the "homosexual agenda" in public schools.

"It's crazy," said Karen England, executive director of Capitol Resource Institute. "It's a day that celebrates the history of a gay individual for being gay. That's his claim to fame."

1. I had a heated argument about this with a religious fundy
who refered to it as gay day. He was pissed off and went on about how I went after him with a lot of anger and attitude, as I had zero tolerance for that sort of bigotry and intolerance. If he wants to hate gays, he has that right. However he does not have the right to hide his hatred, bigotry and intolerance behind religion. His position was supported by a right wing Catholic, who wanted to know why there isn't a Jesus day but there is a gay day. Apparantly they feel if they can't get their religion in public schools gay shouldn't be allowed either. I pointed out one is real, while the other is nothing but a mythology. This issue really fired me up.

2. Problem is with them
They believe gay and christian are both a choice.

Until that changes such an argument will be valid with them.

not allow that violent and dangerous agenda in our schools. And has that guy not heard of Christmas? Who knows what celebrating Christmas is doing to our young people.

5. Bigotry and mindless intolerance always rate an aggressive response.
He can say and feel anything he wishes within the rights of our first amendment. He just shouldn't be shocked when he's called on it and shunned by polite, civilized society for letting everyone know what a knuckle-dragging freak he is.

3. Would the day be celebrated by eating Twinkies?
I'm sure DiFi would be glad to celebrate that day ... after all, she had the chance to intercept Dan White ... and didn't. He's the best thing to happen to her career.

:puke:
