San Francisco Examiner endorses McCain-Palin
http://www.sfexaminer.com/opinion/The_Examiner_endorses_McCain-Palin.html

America is at war overseas and in an economic crisis here at home. Many of her citizens believe the country is on the wrong track. It is for times such as these that men like John McCain are made, to put country first so that it can be put right in its time of need. For this reason, The Examiner endorses McCain for president and his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, for vice president.

... Domestically, McCain is unique in never seeking an earmark to benefit a family member, political ally back home, or financial contributor. As president, he will veto all earmarks and other pork barrel spending. He believes Americans know better than government how best to spend their hard-earned money, and he promises – in words that make many of his colleagues in Congress swallow very hard – to make famous those in government who waste or steal tax dollars.

Ever the maverick, McCain selected Palin because her record mirrors his own in courageously standing up to corrupt special interests regardless of party and cutting government waste. She has the instincts, temperament and backbone to help restore the Republican Party to its conservative principles and the country as a whole to those foundational ideals of individual freedom, equal justice and government that truly is of law, not of men.

It's worth noting that the Examiner is owned by billionaire and Bush supporter Philip Anschutz. I'm sure this endorsement will go over fabulously in San Francisco, hahaha.

1. They also said they were going to replace the word "progressive" with "far leftist" and "extremist"
Edited on Thu Sep-25-08 01:58 PM by ReadTomPaine
They are a RW paper run by a billionaire religious anti-gay extremist. That tells you all you need to know. It may be amazing to some, but there are really no good, large liberal newspapers in the SF Bay area. The printed media there is stunningly bad. It's a disgrace. SFist.com is probably the best place to get a handle on local stories.

On Edit - correction regarding Hearst no longer owning the paper.. thanks Newsjock!

3. RW yes, Hearst no
Hearst owns and runs the Chronicle, not the Examiner. There was a complicated paper-swap some years back.

6. I stand corrected.. it appears to be owned by a conservative religious billionaire...
named Philip Anschutz. the world's 62 richest man. He's on record for his anti-gay initiatives as well.

Thanks for the heads up!

13. The Chron used to be as left-wing as you'd find in the mainstream press
But that was before Hearst.

I just noticed that the Chron's editor is Ward Bushee, who's a long-time Gannettite.

4. FYI on the "Examiner"
it is a freebie rag that hates San Francisco while trying to sell advertising space here. I pick it up often to read the LTE's but taking it seriosly is a mistake, nobody here does.

15. No, it's not a "freebie rag". That would be the weekly SF Guardian.

Correct me if I'm wrong. The SF Chronicle is the morning paper, and the SF Examiner is the afternoon paper. That's how it was when I lived in San Francisco.

16. Nope, that ended years ago
The Examiner is now a six-day morning paper, nominally competing with the Chronicle. The Examiner is distributed for free, however, in boxes, and to homes in high-value ZIP codes two days a week (down recently from five days).

It's a mere shadow of its former self, resulting from years of high-stakes drama. Wikipedia has a brief straightforward summary of the drama, with links to some longer sources:

5. This should go over rather well with the readership
not to mention the outright lies won't help what's left of the paper's credibility.

8. Absurd! Are they trying to be controversial?
Owner Philip Anschutz has a tremedous ego (possibly clinically delusional), if he thinks his SF readers will be positively influenced by his endorsement. What a joke!

In San Francisco...???!!! wow, talk about angering your constituency... Frisco is still very liberal, regardless of their average income.

10. It's not a real paper anymore
there was an afternoon daily called the SF Examiner -- it even had Hunter Thompson as a columnist for a time! -- but it folded a few years ago. A local businessman basically bought the name, started the present cat box liner, then sold it to uber-righty Anschutz. :puke:

11. wow...that came straight from GOP headquarters and was printed verbatim
and yeah, Anschutz is a major shit, but he gets a lot of love among my friends because of his bankrolling of KU athletics (ala T. Boone and OSU)... Ironically, before I ever knew who Anschutz was, I knew his granddaughter as a student...Strange enough, she seemed to be a kind, sane, and rational girl.

12. The Examiner is something they throw on your porch and then you throw it in recycling
Edited on Thu Sep-25-08 02:14 PM by diane in sf
it's hard to get them to stop dumping it on your porch, I think they're trying to make their numbers look better, no one I know reads the thing.

18. LOL! That's too funny!
I wonder if the GOPhers see how they're being manipulated?

When Palin went to see "world leaders" they were basically GOP-installed puppets.

And when she goes on TV, she talks to "friendlies".

Come on. David Letterman said McCain is not behaving the way a tested hero should and Palin isn't allowed to be tested.

Are the GOPhers comfortable with their Party telling them what to do with their votes?

20. When I look for a copy of the Examiner on the weekend in downtown SF, it's always sold out!
Damm, they're popular.

I didn't know the Fang family sold their interests in the SF Examiner.
