The only reason republicans were welcoming McCain back to Washington was to persuade him to lead a revolt against any compromise between the WH and Democrats. Both Boehner and McConnell have made noises like they want to bolt.

I'm waiting to see whether McCain will embrace the compromise or try and stand apart from the process and grandstand. Given his track record, I'd bet on him staging some sort of revolt, IF he can find enough republicans in Washington to stand beside him.

It would be a win-win for him to posture as if he's at odds with both the Democrats and his nemesis, Bush, on this largely unpopular legislation.

1. I'm thinking McCain wants to make this go on as long as possible
so he doesn't have to go to the debate. How self-serving is that?

2. He probably expected it to
. . . and you're right, he'll likely try and find a way to balk and get enough republicans to do a political hold-out until next week
