PETA wants Ben & Jerry's to stop using cow's milk, use breast milk instead

Udderly ridiculous

Wow - "All Natural" has a new meaning.

Last night, on the local news, came this wonderful story. Apparently PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has sent a letter to Vermont Ice Cream maker Ben & Jerry’s, asking them to stop using cow’s milk in their ice cream production. Instead, in an amazing display of idiocy, they have requested that the ice cream maker substitute mother’s milk. Breast milk from nursing moms.

I want to pause here while you consider this. Consider the implications of this request, the logistical nightmare of doing something like this. Firstly, nursing moms would be asked to continue to pump milk long after their children need it; after all, this a strong supply and demand issue, and you can’t just start turning off the teats if you want your ice cream. Secondly, I can’t imagine how this breast milk is supposed to be screened for health risks and issues. Would women seriously consider having the FDA approve of their boobs?

Lastly, let’s consider the costs involved as well; they’d literally have to pay nursing mothers for their volume (and who determines here how much a hundred weight of breast milk is worth?), transportation and storage, processing – yes, similar concerns for cow’s milk as well, but there are DAIRY FARMS that do nothing except TAKE CARE OF THEIR COWS AND MILK THEM. Are we going to start mommy farms for this?

For those who doubt the authenticity of this, here is the local news story.

http://www.wcax.com/Global/story.asp?S=9072635

Given the current political climate in this country, the economic earthquake that has occurred and the grey future we are faced with, I want to thank the people at PETA for making me literally shoot milk out my nose.

8. Somebody posted about it yesterday and just reading the subject made me want to puke.
I have problems with cow's milk when I think of it, let alone human breast milk! I will tell you though, if this was implemented 21` years ago, I would have hired myself out.

34. You would probably do much better on human breastmilk.
Alot of babies have a hard time digesting the protein from cows milk. Some are so sensitive that their moms have to restrict or even give up dairy because of the cows milk protein that gets into the mother's milk.

37. In actuality I had to stop drinking milk when nursing my oldest son. He had a severe
case of colic and once I eliminated cow's milk from my diet, the colic cleared up. My younger son (18 today!) had no problem at all.

9. Oooo yuck!
 I think soy or rice milk would work fine for me especially since I'm lactose intolerant.

I also think they meant it this way; "If you think it's ok to eat ice cream and torture the cows, why not torture the humans into giving up some milk and see what it's like."

19. But really, isn't it just a little 'odd' that we find this to have a high yuck factor
when practically all Americans gladly consume the equivalent product from COWS?
Gotta wonder what the very first human to drink bovine milk was thinking...

20. In my post above I mentioned that when I think of it, I have problems with cow milk
too. I do love milk (although it doesn't always love me) and I close my mind to as you say, the yuck factor. I nursed both of my sons and not for one second was I curious about what it tasted like but they seemed to like it a whole bunch!

BTW! Welcome to DU!!!!

30. I was not adopted and never breastfed. I was born in 1951, at the time when bottles were
all the rage and I had my own issues about my bottle being taken away from me. My parents "mistakenly" left it behind on a family trip to Florida and my thumb became my companion until the ripe old age of 10! I still have oral fixations. Smoking and overeating. Ice cream has never cured that and in fact has been known to add to it at times!

27. The point is to show how stupid it is to consume the milk of another species.
Those dairy farms keep impregnating those cows (keep in mind that no babies= no milk) then shipping the calves off for veal production in order to keep making milk. The whole system runs on killing infants and stealing the milk that was supposed to sustain them. Cows don't just magically lactate any more than any other mammal does.

Me, I'd do an ad campaign with a human woman nursing a calf. Because it makes about as much sense as the opposite.

33. Too expensive. An ounce of breastmilk cost about $4 or $5 now, if not more.
The milk banks do medical screening on the donors. The milk is used for the sickest of newborns and even adult cancer patients.

No, it would be immoral for B&J or anyone else to use it commercially, IMO.

42. Probably like watery crap
Cow's milk is a totally different consistancy from human--seeing as how it's supposed to nourish a calf, who'll eventually grow up to digest grass with its 4 stomachs and runimation technique.

PETA are stupid. And I'm a vegetarian, been one for 32 years! Anyone with half a brain knows you're not gonna get any converts to (sometimes really relevant) causes with this kind of bat-shit crazy methodology!

48. and just how are they planning on getting millions of gallons of breast milk
let's see...cows have 4 teats and a huge bag that holds how much milk? A woman has 2 breasts and holds not very much milk at a time. What are they going to do? strap lactating women to milkers after rounding them up and moving them into the barn?? This is truly the STUPIDEST thing PETA has....uddered.....someone has lost their mind at PETA to even suggest a thing...yep, that would make ice cream sales go thru the roof! I am sure Ben and Jerry's had a hearty laugh at the whole thing, they go green sure, but that is just plain wierd.

Carly
