It's clear now that McCain came back to Washington to drive the bailout deal into the ditch
Edited on Thu Sep-25-08 05:54 PM by bigtree
Dodd says republicans tried to introduce some new proposal at the White House without details. This, after McCain rushed to meet with House Republican leader John Boehner; who promptly came out afterward and told reporters that "no deal" had yet been reached.

Now, Dodd says, work on the compromise will have to continue into next week. That's just what McCain wanted; a distraction from his miserable, faltering campaign.

4. I believe he was called back to organize a revolt or a political stall
. . . so he can play 'maverick'.

I really can't see him buying into a compromise between his nemesis, Bush, and Democrats in Congress. I think his only (political) option is to stand against it with whatever republicans will bolt.

2. There goes the debate--or at least his part in it.
And there goes his campaign.

5. Yep. Yesterday we were hearing that a deal was close, and Dems were
saying they had the votes. But McCain says he doesn't think so and he has to suspend his campaign and go to washington, blah, blah... and what do you know about that! No deal. Bush and McCain cooked this up. McCain is determined to weasel out of the debate, and I'd bet my teeth the VP debate would never be rescheduled.

7. I think McCain has really lost it. He is in
another world that is built around him. It may not be Alzheimers but it is some form of dementia. If his friends or wife care about him they had better take charge.

10. In this case, I hope he succeeds, and gives the Dems enough backbone to not "deal".
It would be ever so nice to, at last, see the Democrats tell Bush, McCain, et al, to shove the bailout.

11. I don't think the Democrats can bolt
. . . being in the majority and all.

It doesn't look like you're alone out there in wanting it to fail. That's why balking looks like a perfect gig for a perfect demagogue like McCain.

12. republicans in the process of backing down and forging their own cover bill
as I said this morning . . .

The only reason republicans were welcoming McCain back to Washington was to persuade him to lead a revolt against any compromise between the WH and Democrats. Both Boehner and McConnell have made noises like they want to bolt.

I'm waiting to see whether McCain will embrace the compromise or try and stand apart from the process and grandstand (looks like republicans are setting that up right now). Given his track record, I'd bet on him staging some sort of revolt, IF he can find enough republicans in Washington to stand beside him.

It would be a win-win for him to posture as if he's at odds with both the Democrats and his nemesis, Bush, on this largely unpopular legislation.
