Rude Johnny Maverick Avoided Eye Contact Throughout Debate
McCain's Clear Contempt for Obama: Did the Maverick Forget His Manners?

http://www.Newsvine.com

I'll shake your hand because I must, but I won't look you in the eye.

Sep 27, 2008 9:46 AM

John McCain, American hero and political maverick, certainly displayed toughness in Friday night's debate. His answers were very strong, resolute, and clear (though not always concise). His command of the issues was undeniably impressive. But for one minor stumble through a foreign leader's name, he rattled off information in a blistering display of his political acumen. John McCain proved one thing to the American people--this man is not ready for political pasture just yet.

That said, rarely have we seen an American icon--especially one who claims to be a unifier--act in such a patronizing and contemptful manner toward an opponent. Illustrations abound:

While Obama referred to Senator McCain repeatedly by his first name, and tried to discuss issues in a friendly manner, McCain never wavered from his highly impersonal behavior toward the Illinois Senator. He gave the appearance that he would rather be back in Hanoi than have to be friendly toward the man on stage with him.

Senator Obama repeatedly looked at McCain when he was talking, as though he was trying to have a friendly discussion with a colleague. McCain behaved as though looking at Obama would violate his own policy of never talking with the enemy.

Senator Obama repeatedly offered his own views while displaying respect for Senator McCain's. On areas of agreement, he repeatedly said things like, "You are right, John." Yet McCain showed zero respect for anything Obama had to say, repeatedly saying, "Senator Obama doesn't understand..." Almost as if Obama was either an imbecile or was not even on the stage. It was hard to escape the impression that maybe McCain thought Obama's mere presence was an offense against....well, something. Him? The country?

Most of the early polls are indicating that people thought Obama won the debate. Some of the polls show a thin margin of victory, others show a wider margin. What they don't show is how the Maverick has morphed into the perfect example of what is wrong with American politics. Arrogance. Ego. Contempt for those who differ. Bile.

On Friday night, two men entered an auditorium to engage in a debate. One was a gentleman, with the makings of a true American statesman, and the other was a maverick in need of a nap.

1. You know he is a POW
He can't turn his head to the left or right when standing at a 90 degree angle, with one or more arms out stretched and while smiling.

2. I was frosted when he said he was a maverick and has one
for a running mate. What he has for a running make is a dunce. He was rude, and at times I saw him clench his teeth, We all know that angry look. He was one step from spitting fire several times.

4. A Psychotherapist Says it was anger and fear
From http://talkingpointsmemo.com/

Here's one comment we got from TPM Reader EO ...

As a psychotherapist and someone who treats people with anger management problems, we typically try to educate people that anger is often an emotion that masks other emotions. I think it's significant that McCain didn't make much, if any, eye contact because it suggests one of two things to me; he doesn't want to make eye contact because he is prone to losing control of his emotions if he deals directly with the other person, or, his anger masks fear and the eye contact may increase or substantiate the fear.
I noticed him doing the same thing in the Republican primary debates. The perception observers are likely to have is that he is unwilling to acknowledge the opponent's legitimacy and/or is contemptuous of the opponent.
