MICHAEL MOORE’S “SLACKER UPRISING” DRAWS RECORD-BREAKING DOWLOADS AND CHART-TOPPING NUMBERS ON THE WEB
OVER TWO MILLION VISITORS ON “SLACKERUPRISING.COM” IN FIRST THREE DAYS FREE MOVIE PROVIDES “RECESSION-PROOF ENTERTAINMENT”
TRAVERSE CITY, MI (Sept. 26, 2008) -- Oscar-winning filmmaker Michael Moore’s political concert film, “Slacker Uprising,” is rapidly spreading on the internet -- legally. On Tuesday morning, Moore became the first major filmmaker to release a feature-length film free online. Three days later, SlackerUprising.com had already garnered more than 2 million visitors.
Moore, who has made three of the five top-grossing documentaries of all time, decided to release his latest film for free on the internet as a gift to his fans, and attempt to rally young voters to get involved in the presidential election. He teamed up with Robert Greenwald’s Brave New Films to coordinate the free, online distribution of the film. They partnered with various online media companies with the capability to allow viewers to stream, download, and burn “Slacker Uprising” to DVD.
The partners -- Blip.tv, Amazon Video On Demand, iTunes, Hypernia and Lycos -- have all noted the great success of the film in its first few days:
· “Slacker Uprising” became the #1 viewed film on Amazon Video-On-Demand the first day it was released.
· “Slacker Uprising” is the first free offering in the iTunes music store and is being downloaded at three times the rate of the average Hollywood blockbuster..
· Hypernia, which allows for burning high-quality DVD’s, reported a record amount of downloads in the first 24 hours.
· Blip.tv reported more than 150,000 views of the site, alone.
On the free film’s early success, Michael Moore stated, “I’m glad I can provide recession-proof entertainment in these difficult economic times.”
Citizens and activists have heeded Moore’s calls to use the film for political purposes. In the first three days, more than 60 screenings, house parties and fundraisers have been organized around the country. From Waupaca, WI to Erie, PA to Big Forks, MT, citizens have gone to SlackerUprising.com and arranged screenings in their homes and communities.
