DU Admins: Why Can't You Block The Bigoted "Yes On Prop 8" Banner Ads??!!!
Do we really need to see anti-gay, bigoted banner ads infesting DU at every page? C'mon!

1. Odd. I'm not seeing them -
and I don't have anything blocked, since I understand that DU gets more money if I let them display.

Now I may be forced to willingly expose myself to, one might say, Ad nauseam. :P

11. I haven't heard anything recently
but when it was initially explained they said they got $ for page display views, and more $ for click-throughs. It may have changed - except for when I have dial up I let them display. I don't know whether it makes a difference if you use a browser to block the ads or the preferences tool (if you're a donor).

I don't really notice most of them - except one that was on the home page that was the visual equivalent of the Hustler meat grinder cover - even though it was from a politically compatible source. (I'm dating myself - curious to see if anyone else remembers that cover). I did block images from that source for a while.

4. Have you contacted them about them?
Your profile says you are in California - it's quite possible that only people using California ISPs see them.

6. If you send a private message to the admins they probably will block the ad.
As I recall, the DU admins don't have the time or capability to filter ads before we actually see them (or to search through posts made to the various forums complaining about them), but once we do the admins can block them IF we send them a message to let them know the ads are there. I haven't seen this particular ad (not being from California, I suppose), so I can't alert them because I don't know it's precise content. But I'm sure the admins would appreciate your letting them know that an ad that supports discrimination against our own is being displayed on this site.

8. Oh, fer fuck's sake - the ads are automatically generated based on keywords on the pages.
Jesus Christ, but people get self-righteously indignant over the littlest fucking things.

The admins have no more control what google ads serve to DU than I do over Oprah's inability to be anything but self-serving.

12. Sorry, but I don't think a Prop that takes away the right of gays to
marry in CA is a little fucking thing.

BTW - that fucking banner ad is staring me in the face as I type.

Look, as a father of two young kids, I'm sick of having to explain the unacceptable to my kids, like explaining the bigotry of the fucking fantasy believing Bible thumpers and their god-damned asshole-ism when it comes to gay marriage. Fuck the Xians, fuck Prop 8 and fuck not having control over which Google ads post on DU.

53. you should check your dictionary for the proper definition of "feature"...
because they don't. just having something appear on the screen is NOT the same as the website "featuring" it.

sorry.

you'll have to settle for 'getting a grip' just like a normal person.

Like I said up above, DU has no control over what ads show up.

Stop being so self-righteously pure, and get a grip.

If you donate, you get rid of a bunch of displayed ads.

In addition, I run the AdBlock Plus Firefox plugin. I hardly ever see ads on web pages anymore.

I run the Firefox plugin, available at the Mozilla website: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865

It's free, and you'll never see them again.

37. You are welcome. Currently there is an anti-gay ad
featured at the top of this page. As I type this, I am subjected to its bigoted message. In the ad, it purports to educate me about "protecting marriage", when, in fact, it is a link to a fabulously well funded rightwing organization that is organized around depriving California citizens of their rights under our Constitution.

Apparently, it is okay for the DU powers-that-be to profit from this bigotry because one can simply "not see it" if they want to. Because, we all know like a baby playing peek-a-boo, if you don't see it, it isn't there.

To follow that logic, we should just ignore the big mean GOP because what you can't see can't hurt you.

It seems to me that, as offensive as the ads are, it's best to let them keep running as they are. Can you imagine anyone on the DU being swayed by ads like that? They're just wasting their money, which means that there will be less money to spend elsewhere.
