Bullwinkle925 and I are having a great time as poll greeters
We're working almost every day of early voting in Texas. Turnout has been MASSIVE all over the state. If we could at least turn Dallas County blue, I'd be thrilled.

There have been so many lovely stories. On Monday a frail 80-year-old African-American woman was too weak to walk into the polling place, so the election judge came outside to her and we made a "voting booth" for her with our jackets. She wanted a hug afterward, and we were all crying and hugging. An African-American man who has voted in every election since 1944 came up to talk to us and was so thrilled and proud to be voting for an African-American candidate for president. We've had a number of elderly white women tell us they voted for Barack, as well as a number of kids voting for the first time and new citizens doing the same. Today we had a man tell us his passenger (probably his mother) has diabetes and fainted in the polling place. They brought her some orange juice, and the election judge let her vote while she was still on the floor. The man said she was lying on the floor tapping on the screen to vote for "our guy." A young African-American woman brought her baby son and had her picture taken next to our Irving for Obama banner and planned to put the picture in a scrapbook for her son to look at someday.

We have been in tears every day after meeting so many wonderful people. We're feeling such unity - astonishing after the division and rancor of the last 8 years. This man simply MUST be elected, and we're doing everything we can to help.

We are taking Sunday off, but will be at the polls all next week. Tuesday I'm attending voter protection training for attorneys. After Bullwinkle925 leaves next Saturday (WAAAAAHHHHH) I plan to phonebank the rest of the weekend. On Election Day I'll be stationed wherever I'm needed in Dallas County to be a poll watcher. It feels just GREAT to be so involved.

1. One thing poll greeters need to do: pass out pamphets listing Dem
candidates and positions on the issues. You wouldn't believe how many ballots give NO indication of whether or not a candidate for a local office is a Dem or Repug-and all politics are local, so it's important! I usually just print up a pile of my own with information provided by my local Democratic HQ and pass them out. I get so many "Thank yous' for the information; people really want it! Just a suggestion.

3. Oh, that's what we're doing
We have a "coordinated campaign" door hanger, as well as a nifty Obama flyer which we obtained today. We also have a voter guide with candidate answers to questions, and we've had several people ask to look at it. We're encouraging a straight party vote and explaining to people how Barack will need Democrats in the state government too in order to carry out his agenda.

7. Well, it's a lot easier to do when you're not working
Neither of us is working at the moment, and we feel it's only right to help out as much as we can.

11. Well yes, but I didn't want to
say that. ;)

And maybe then we can get a decent government in Canada to match.

17. Australians are as well
I have been a fan of Obama since the 2004 convention speech. After that speech I turned to my wife and said there is the first African-American president. I only thought it would not be until 2012 or 16.

We had our moment in the sun last November when we kicked out the 13 year conservative government of toady John Howard. I really hope you guys enjoy the same feeling we had last year. Grins from ears to ears.

He has to be elected. The rest of the world can't have another four years of Bush. Good luck guys, and keep up the good work.

Peace

12. Dallas county has been blue for several election cycles, hasn't it?
Tarrant county was still slightly red in '04 and '06, iirc, but Dallas is and has been blue, I thought.

Either way, thanks for your contribution, and good job!

The United States is a LIBERAL Country.

13. Tarrant County is blood red. Dallas leans Democratic compared to the rest of the state.

14. Dallas is blue but not as blue as Austin
We've been dark blue for years. We're about to kick the last republican holding any elected office in Austin out on hist butt. Every other office is held by a Democrat once again. We're back baby!

With the huge voting numbers we're hoping Harris county (Houston area) will go blue this year too.
