I'm getting some greedy trick or treaters tonight |

I blame the parents for not teaching sharing and moderation. From this point on it's one piece of candy per kid. Jeesh!

43. In the 80's I worked as a travel agent. Cruise lines and tour |
|
companies would frequently sponsor early evening seminars that would generally include a buffet. The vultures would descend on the table and pile up huge amounts of food. Some of them brought tupperware and freezer bags and shoved in even more to take home - all the while elbowing everybody else who dared come near. It was unbelievably rude and boorish. So, yeah, I've seen adults at the buffet table - and it's sometimes not a pretty sight.

|
They hold the bowl and give you what they think/hope you will like. I've had kids tell me, even tonight, I don't like Reeses's, give me the Kit-Kats (and vice-versa). That's cool with me.
I think there are a lot of great responses on this thread, some of which have NOTHING to do with Halloween! ;-)

|
I once handed out candy by *handfuls* to trick-or-treaters. Some little brat, probably not even 2 years old, stood there saying "More. More." Her parents stood there the whole time, smiling at their spoiled little b*tch.
I said, "Bye, bye!" to the kid in my best "Aren't you just adorable?" voice, loud enough for the parents to hear. Then I closed my door and waited for them to leave.

Kids today, I guess...
Well to be fair, they may be living off it soon. We'll see how the economy goes and who gets elected.

You parcel out the candy. We gave one piece per kid. Tough economic times, kids. Gotta hustle and get to more houses if you want more sugar.

So many little hands grabbing, hoarding. Like they've never seen candy before. The point of trick or treating is to go to as many houses as possible and get a "treat" from each. Not to use one house as a bulk market.

22. Don't let them reach into the bowl, then. Hand out the candies individually yourself. |
|
I mean, they're KIDS. Of course they're greedy for candy (though I do agree in general the teaching of basic manners deosn't seem to occur as much as it did years ago).
I grew up on the streets of a big city 30+ years ago, and even then, I think if anyone had been crazy enough to offer us kids a bowl of candy and told us to take from it, we'd have grabbed double fistfuls, too, and that was 30 years ago.
Though no one in my neighborhood would have been that nuts to let us at their full candy bowl.
So I think you have a problem easily solved next year and all you have to do is keep the candy bowl inside and dole out the candies one to a customer, or two if you're close to the end of the night with a surplus of candy.

I only had a few, and I had a huge bowl full of stuff...The first two little girls were very polite when I held the bowl down for them to choose...I had like mini M/M's and Snickers and Skittles and mini Rice Krispies treats. . .I actually told them to take more! One laughed when I said "now take a bit more. . .you need to share with your parents". . .
The second group was greedy...they reached in with both hands and started scooping stuff into their bags - I was shocked. I let them get two handfuls in and then pulled the bowl away. The third one was a young girl...a cute costume. She ASKED me how much she could grab, and I said.."well, how about one of each thing." She politely picked one of each item from the bowl and said "thank you....Happy Halloween" . . and ran off.
Of course, now I have half a bowl of treats left. . .no more trick-or-treaters, and I don't like Skittles. Don't they have like a place to donate candy for kids?

71. tell me about it. I made that mistake ONCE. First gang of the night |
|
about 6 years ago, and there were five kids ranging from four to seven I guess,(They all had masks). I give the bowl to the first kid and he dumped the whole bowl in his bag! I was just slackjawed! Even the kids next to him were just staring at him from behind their masks.
I told them to hold on, got another bag and then handed two pieces out per kid.
You learn the hard way.

We get HORDES of people from other neighborhoods. The gang bangers are my personal faves.
Grown kids that try to take all the candy before the little kids from the neighborhood have a chance.
What REALLY yanks me is the "You owe us" attitude. I don't owe anyone shit.
Takes the fun out of Halloween for me, actually.

25. Surprised to read your post because some of the kids in my neighborhood were |
|
grabbing the candy right out of the bowl before I could hand it to them. One little kid who was about 3 (his dad was holding a beer and smoking a cigarette on my porch) grabbed at the candy and then tried to open my front door to let my dog out. I thought it was just where I live, and was feeling sorry for myself for moving here. It seems you are right about parents not teaching their kids manners. They go around like they are entitled to anything they want. The only thing I can say is the parents will live to regret their permissive parenting once these kids become teenagers.

35. I blame the parents too... my adult kids thanked me... |
|
For making sure they didn't make asses of themselves like that the first time they witnessed this phenomenon. And when there are screaming kids in stores or restaurants with parents "negotiating" with the little brats. It's not their fault they are brats, and my kids understand this now. I wasn't exactly a drill Sargent, but my kids knew they could pretty much cut loose at home, but when we were out and about, they had to behave like little human beings, or we went home. It didn't take but once being shuffled back into the car for them to get the hint. The pity is, kids feel good about discipline, they really do! If you love and care about your kids, you care how they behave. Kids who are left to their own devices feel neglected, and they act out. It's not rocket science being a parent, but the lazy need not apply!

44. Wow, my experience was the exact opposite. |
|
I sat on the front porch with the dog and just held out the bowl. Must have had close to 50 kids this year, and hardly any of them took more than one piece...and I swear 95% of them said "thank you", and the older ones added "Happy Halloween!" Next-door neighbors took their kids out, so they just left a big bowl of candy on their front porch, and I heard parents telling their kids, "Only take one piece." This really was the nicest - and largest - group of kids we've ever had.

I even asked several of them to go ahead and take more than one (lots left over). :)

61. Here they all hold the bags out and I toss stuff in. |
|
Except that it rained, so I only got one trick-or-treater, my neighbor's grandson got wheeled over in his stroller.

63. there's a trick to handing out candy & not letting them grab |
|
i bought bags of mixed candy and opened one or two at a time, poured them in a cauldron and when the kids knocked on the door i stepped outside holding the cauldron close to me with two arms around it.
i would wait until i heard "trick or treat"
if they just looked at me or smiled i asked them: "can i help you?"
when a few of them said: "i'd like some candy" or "could i have some candy?" i told them: "you have to say the magic words"
if they said "please" i said: "no, you have to say the magic *halloween* words"
so of course they would say: TRICK OR TREAT
----now...
holding the cauldron close, i would reach in and pick out--individually--a single piece of candy and say "okay, i think this would be a good one," and i placed it in my other hand as i continued to hold the cauldron. then i'd pick out another one, saying how this box or sucker matches their costume or purple and pink go good together. and i'd hold that one in my other hand too. i'd pick out a third one and ask if they liked it. and then drop three pieces in their bag. sometimes i'd give them a fourth piece, saying "and this one is for good luck"
every kid. i was matching up candy to costumes/eye color. saying they looked like a smart kid so smarties would be a good match. saying they should have laffy taffy because they had a great smile or i bet they liked to laugh--asking if they liked banana flavor, or strawberry.
with the little kids i knelt down and talked to them.
every piece of candy was special, justified, chosen just for them, or i checked to make sure they liked it. (btw--did you know that 98% of kids DO NOT LIKE the hot tamales? i started checking about those hot tamales after awhile--"okay, do any of you like hot tamales?" a lot of dads like them, so dads--and a few moms--got some hot tamales)
-----
i think i had one or two kids who tried to reach in the cauldron and grab something. "excuse me--" i'd pull it away, "hang on a second" and i'd turn and focus on someone else. i remember this one boy who did that, his mother was behind him and she grabbed onto his arm and told him not to do that.
------
sorry for the long/boring post.

67. I was surprised by the POLITENESS of the last trick-or-treaters I had. |
|
We didn't have many, to be honest...maybe 20 kids total in six groups that rang the doorbell, counting the toddlers who were held by their parents.
But, when I held out two identical bowls to the trick-or-treaters... one filled with full-sized candy bars, the other filled with nice fresh apples... almost 1/3rd of the kids went for the apples.
I was shocked, and I went on and on about how "well-informed and health-minded" todays kids must be, until my Sweetie took me aside and reminded me that children think I'm a big scary creep even when I'm not dressed up for Hallowe'en...
Yeah, the kids didn't actually PREFER the apples; they just took one look at me and assumed that the bowl full of Snicker's bars & Reese's PB Cups must be some sort of TRICK. :evilfrown:

70. It's after 2:30 and NOBODY showed up! |
|
I had Jack Link's Jerky Treats, full-size candy bars, fruit, little pretzel-and-cheese dippy thingies, and beer and little bottles of assorted booze for the parents (separate bowl, of course). The doorbell didn't ring once. Fine. Be that way. I'll just eat and drink it all myself.
But I'm wondering if the barbed wire I strung in front of the door had anything to do with it.

74. We live out in the country and rarely get a trick or treater. I love kids |
|
and would love to see them dressed up in costume. I even turn on the porch light hoping they will show.
