This All Hallow's Eve, let me share something truly frightening with you.

This is a journal entry I found torn and crumpled on the ground in a cemetery, many moons ago. I always wondered how things ended. Surely, it couldn't have turned out that badly? :shrug:

November 2, 2004

9AM: What a beautiful clear day! I'm feeling really optimistic. We've spent the last 8 months working so hard. We've registered hundreds of thousands of new voters. I've been calling and e-mailing undecideds, and I think I've convinced at least 200 of them to choose Kerry. We've even been lobbying the media for balanced coverage and raising awareness of election fraud.

Over last few days, it looks like we've been gaining ground. Sure, the polls are close, but everyone knows the pollsters aren't properly factoring in young people with cell phones, who overwhelmingly favor Kerry. Our ground game is as strong as it's ever been. Our candidate kicked ass in those debates. Sentiment against Bush is getting worse every day. I think our time is finally here!!


1 PM: We're just starting to get some exit polling data. The mood around here is downright Euphoric! Kerry is polling ahead in several key swing states, including Ohio.


2 PM: I just got a call from a friend pretty high up inside the campaign. Things are looking almost too good to be true!!!


5 PM: I'm going home a little bit early. Everything is running smoothly at this polling location. We had more poll watchers than we needed and no one has called for a ride in the last few hours. I'm sure I've done everything I can do at this point.


6 PM: I stopped by the store on the way home to pick up a bottle of champagne. This is going to be a great evening, watching the results come in with the family. Just a few more hours until things finally start to turn around in this country!!

8 PM: I'm starting to get a little bit nervous here. We though New Mexico was solid, but it looks like it's slipping away. I'm sure we can hang on to Ohio, though.

10 PM: This is bloodshed! Long lines in urban Ohio are causing delays, but it's looking more and more likely that we won't have the numbers to overcome Bush's rural leads.

11 PM:Please, if anyone is reading this, DON'T LET THIS BE YOU. Learn from my mistakes. Why didn't I make more phone calls? Why didn't I canvass one more day? I could have stopped them! I think I'm going to finish that champagne and lay down for a while. Things could look better tomorrow.

12 PM: All hope is lost. It looks like we are going to be stuck with the GOP vampires, ghouls and monsters for 4 more years. There are brain-eating Republican zombies outside my window as I write this entry. Last week I had a vision of a mean witch from Alaska riding a Dinosaur into the White House. I didn't think anything of it at the time, but now I'm starting to wonder. What does this mean? Maybe you know. Wait.. I hear glass breaking downstairs. I'm going to go investigate.

1. Actually,

Euphoric ended for those of us working the polling places in Ohio around 1:00 pm. I believe the exit polls were already showing trouble - if not, it was only because the polls had not yet caught up with what those of standing in the cold rain had already observed. The lopsided early stream of Kerry voters who cheerfully waved and honked as they drove in and out had shifted dramatically by early afternoon to overwhelmingly Bush voters who glared or tried to avoid eye contact with us (or worse, came back to taunt us with photos of dismembered fetuses to call us baby killers).
