Total fluff Halloween Friday nite post: The best horror flick ever?
The original "Halloween" with Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasance is still the best to me....

And for camp value, "An American Werewolf in London" is a total cult classic.....

11. More than that, the best American film so far
A complex interlocking mystery puzzle with overlapping themes of voyeurism, lust, greed, murder and secrets. The conversation over sandwiches in the parlor between Marion and Norman is one of filmdom's greatest scenes. Everything about this film, the story, script, acting, camera work, editing and musical soundtrack works together to create one unforgettable whole, depicting the sleazy underbelly of mid-20th century America like no other film.

13. One of my absolute favorites, though I'd rank it lower than you did.
But what's also stunning about it is its reliance on atmosphere and suspense, especially compared to the horror films of today, particularly those insipid torture-porn movies where nothing is left to the imagination.

14. Yeah, the "shock" scenes including the famous shower scene are
almost secondary to the buildup of suspense and drama and creepy, sinful atmosphere. I guess calling it the best American film so far is a little bit of a blanket statement and on second thought I would reword it to say that it is the finest example of the craft of filmmaking so far.

Did you ever see the remake? :puke:

19. No, and I still can't believe someone paid for that to be made.
The original "Psycho" is almost a perfectly constructed and executed film - only the excessively long explanatory speech at the end reduces it slightly - and there was no point in remaking it.

"Halloween" was very good though.

4. "Phantasm" was a scary-as-hell flick that never got the credit it deserved.
I don't recommend watching it after dark.

5. We watched The Birds tonight! Poltergeist is a great scary movie as well.
For a classic Halloween movie, I suppose Halloween (the first in the series) may be the best!

7. Blair Witch Project
I even knew it wasn't for real.... still scared me so bad I had to turn it off before the last 20 minutes. My own imagination is really scarier than any horror movie I've seen... I'm a big fan of horror - but not really slasher or torture porn like the "Saw" series.

Anyway, I watched the last 20 minutes the next night, and still was a little afraid for weeks to be around any area with a bunch of trees in the dark....

8. Scream
I don't go into large amounts of gore, and it's been years since I've seen some of the older ones, but I thought Scream was pretty clever.

Not the scariest movie ever, but it's damn cool. How can you not like a movie where the house implodes at the end amidst a sea of bodies rising from the grave?

The original Dawn of the Dead gets an honorable mention.

12. The original "Night of the Living Dead" is still genuinely frightening
The shoestring production values actually add to the authentic feel - it seems like it was filmed as it was happening. It's in the public domain now and can be viewed online for free at such sites as Google video, etc.

17. Mothman Prophecies is good
Love the ones mentioned so far. "Horror" tends to be one of my favorite movie categories, along with comedy. But it's so hard to find a good scary movie.

Halloween, The Excorcist, The Omen, Mothman Prophecies, The Shining...all good.

Hostel got my heart racing. Eraserhead was a mindfuck.

On edit: The original The Hills Have Eyes was scary. Wolf Creek scared the hell out of me. I used to travel out west in the desert and being so isolated was a great concern.

I forgot the original Halloween. The Rob Zombie remake had an interesting take on the original. I only wish it would have ended where the original began. Speaking of Rob Zombie, The Devil's Rejects was scary, too.

Alien was great, too.
