Snatch is unsafe
Snatch Land Rovers 'unsafe in danger zone'
The commander of British forces in Afghanistan has admitted that the Army's infamous "Snatch" Land Rovers are not safe for use in high-risk areas.

Last Updated: 11:51PM BST 21 Jun 2008

Speaking from his headquarters in Lashkar Gar, Brigadier Mark Carleton-Smith told The Telegraph that although the lightly-armoured vehicle was not a "death trap", he would prefer not to use it on operations in Helmand.

Asked if he would rather not have to use the Snatch Land Rover in Helmand, the brigadier said: "I think that's fair. It's not a vehicle of last resort but it's clearly not a vehicle of first choice."

Four British troops died last week when their Snatch Land Rover was destroyed by a Taliban landmine.

Their deaths brought to nine the number of soldiers killed so far in June in Helmand.

Brig Carleton-Smith, the commander of 16 Air Assault Brigade, added: "I would not accept that they (the Snatch) are a 'death trap'. The incident on Tuesday, when the TA SAS's Snatch was destroyed – it was struck by a landmine anything from 100-150kg , which would probably have destroyed all the vehicles other than the most heavily armoured."

He said: "I certainly wouldn't elect to use Snatch in the high-risk areas. The plan is to phase them out over time. Their profile is most appropriate to the urban centres."

16. Call me Debbie Downer but I don't think the jokes are appropriate.
This vehicle like the Humvee is unsafe and the number of soldiers that have lost arms, legs, suffered severe brain damage or fatalities is significant as a result of the use of these death traps.
