OK, this is 2 weeks late, but it's been 10 years since Jon Postel passed away.

Al Gore never actually claimed he invented the Internet, but if any one person could come close to making that claim, it would have been Postel. He fought very hard to keep back the corporate takeover of the Internet, and though he lost that fight he bought us some very precious years that got the free, open, public utility of the Internet as an idea in the public mind that the corporations are finding hard to dislodge.

His work editing the RFC documents was an invaluable service to the world. His core belief that a public network is a public good, and greater than the sum of its parts, still guides the better angels of the Internet community.

His name lives on in many awards and recognitions, but possibly most famously in the Postel Principle: "be conservative in what you send, and liberal in what you receive", one of the best design principles ever stated.
