I just had a thought....what if Obama had picked Bayh? |
|
I just wonder how differently this race would have gone if Obama had picked Evan Bayh instead of Biden. Can't help but think things wouldn't have gone as well.

1. Biden adds quite a lot. Bayh wouldn't have added anything. |
|
However, people are so angry at GOP mismanagement of this country that I don't think picking Bayh would have made an appreciable difference. Yes, he's conservative as all hell, but I don't think that would have discouraged too many of us.
After all, Bayh is a far cry from the laughably ignorant and completely unprepared Palin.

3. He Would be Leading by 11 Rather Than 13 Points |

As much as I love Biden, this campaign has been about Barack.

Biden was a much better pick. Obama's perceived lack of experience is supremely balanced by Biden's political longevity. Obama's youth is balanced by Biden's age. Bayh is somewhat youthful, he's somewhat conservative and he's from Indiana, a state that hasn't gone Democratic in the electoral college since 1964 (but just might this year even without his presence on the ticket).
On the down side, eight years from now a 61-year-old Vice President Bayh could be a viable Presidential candidate. But a 74-year-old Vice President Biden? I don't know...

6. I'm thinking that Biden will "bow out" in '12..and Obama will probably choose a woman |
|
maybe Hillary..or janet napolitano..
After a successful term, he could afford to offer it to Hillary.. That would give an opportunity for continuity....and no one could say he "needed" more experieinced guidance after a 4 yr term

11. She'd be a bit long in the tooth herself by then. |
|
If the idea was to set her up for a run in 2016, she'd be 69 years old at that point.

Strange how that is....but Hillary actually looks better with Barack than she does with Bill, in that campaigning sense, IMO.
Don't know why....

7. Biden quietly brought a lot to this ticket. |
|
Biden very much lends a lot to Obama, and his presence has been a great stabilizer, perceptually speaking. Biden gets to play the role of the voice of experience to Obama's raw talent. They complement each other very well.
Bayh? Meh.

I'd actually give him most of the credit for solidifying Eastern PA.

12. I originally supported Bayh |
|
I think Bayh would have been good and supported him for VP. For the first few weeks I felt like Obama had made the wrong choice. But, Biden's sincerity and authenticity have complimented Obama very well. With Biden, you know he's all heart. You feel like he cares about real people. Sometimes he doesn't think through his comments, but, it all leads into what the electorate is looking for this election season. They're so tired of politics as usual. They want authenticity. For that reason, I think Biden has augmented the Obama brand, while Palin has completely contradicted the McCain brand.
In electoral terms I don't think it would have made a huge difference. Indiana would probably be 5%+ Obama, and maybe Penn and Ohio would be a little closer. But, whatever Bayh's strength, he is no attack dog. I also think he wouldn't have coped as well with Palin in the VP debate, where Biden won, not just on experience and issues, but also on likability. I was wrong. Looking at the candidates who were out there I don't think Obama could have made a better choice. It would have been all Hillary in the closing stretch and Repubs would be trying to tear them apart. Much better with Biden.

13. That was the thing about Hillary......she is such a personality, |
|
it would have distracted from the top of the ticket....and yes, I do believe that without her on the ticket we will be getting more Republican votes than we would have otherwise....if for no other reason, for the fact that the Repugs always did dislike the fact that Bill Clinton got into that White House.
Barack, like everything else where we have tried to second guess him, made the correct decision without our assistance. Not to say that he didn't look at all of the possibilities, he did. It just to say that he made the correct final decision for what he wanted to achieve. A good sign of what will be a great leader, IMO.

McCain had to go for something unexpected after Biden was picked.
