My God, THE PHONES JUST CAME BACK ON!!! |
|
Oh. My. God.
THE PHONES JUST CAME BACK ON. AND THE INTERNET!
For those of you who don't know me, my name is Jeff and I live in Galveston, TX. I've posted here about Hurricane Ike and how I've dealt with it, including a very tasteless zombie thread that I very much regret.
All that aside, we were hit hard, and the city still needs help. But tonight, believe it or not, about 30 minutes ago, the phones came back on--and the DSL light on the router lit up!
It's been since mid-September that I've had real, serious, internet--and now it's back baby!
I'm running Windows Update on a laptop! The BF is downloading some meaningless WOW update crap! I'm bittorrenting every episode of this season of The Sarah Jane Adventures, (big Doctor Who fan here)!
It's back! I'm back! Yipp-hippee-horrayyyy!

We went without power for ages after Charlie hit us. When our power came on there was a surge and it blew up all our appliances including my washer and dryer. Good times. :)

In Galveston County, about 35 reported, and that includes Bolivar. Some are still missing, some turn up in shelters every day. Keep hoping for those that are still missing.

I read your post the other day drawing attention to Galveston and how the media has forgotten us. Thanks. With any luck, we will both be reporting to work on the island soon.

Trust me, we moved our offices to Dickinson, way out in Dickinson. The drive is 30 minutes to work in the AM, and 1 1/2 hours home in the PM. Speaking of PM, PM me and we'll meet up for a cocktail some evening. Hopefully to celebrate the election of a real President!

I didn't sleep much last night, and was thinking of Galveston. We aren't getting any real news regarding post Hurricane Ike, and I was wondering how people down there were faring. I mean, are people getting their houses in order? Do those people who lost their houses on the island have places to stay? In general, how are things going with the clean up and rebuilding? I am glad to hear you are once again connected!

26. With all the news about the election... |
|
the story of Galveston gets buried.
We need a 24/7 news channel that focuses on something other than the story of the moment.
I realize the election is important, but constant endless coverage for almost two years is a bit much.
It's almost reached the stage where a asteroid could be headed at the earth and the news channels would only mention it on the scroll at the bottom of the screen while they showed some McCain campaign event.

My husbear would be stark-raving :)
Glad you guys are back and you're safe. You boys need anything, let your brothers in NC know, k? We left Florida partly because of 'canes (my husbear went through Andrew) and partly because of the madness it turned into. When Jebbie came in and started turning it into the third world, it was time. I left Texas after the Ijdit took over (I so loved Gov Richards) and have missed it since.
Glad you're both back online. Y'all take care and keep us all posted, y'hear?

I know how it feels to do without the internet. Fuck the phones. I hate a damn phone, but the internet is my life support.
However, I do feel a need to point out a possible error in your OP...if you were saying what I think you were saying, that is.
You said: "The BF is downloading some meaningless WOW update crap!"
If that is a World of Warcraft update, trust me, it is not meaningless. I haven't played it yet, but I still want to, terribly. As soon as I clear up enough hard drive space to install it, I'll be downloading those "meaningless" updates too. Until then, I'll be playing Runescape like crazy and wishing I could play WoW.
