... that there are few undecideds than the polls say as people might not be inclined to say who they'll vote for and so they feel the least confrontational way to avoid the discussion is to claim to have not made a decision yet.

may not even show up to vote. If you can't choose between these two at this late stage, it was discussed, their discontent with either may keep them home. Also, they pointed out that undecideds at this point may be many who were polled who have no intention of voting.
