NEW YORK, NY November 01, 2008 —Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s detractors have sometimes accused the Illinois Senator of being Muslim and Arab –- as if those were dirty words or smears. That's been disturbing to many Arab and Muslim Americans – even though they say they're used to it, as WNYC’s Marianne McCune reports.

1. It is disturbing ....

The labels are tossed around as pejoratives by the most ignorant members of our society. I long to live in a society where one's religious (or nonreligious) beliefs and ethnicity are as pertinent as the color of one's eyes.

2. That is one other, often unnoticed reason why McCain pulled out of Michigan

Michigan has many Muslims and Arabs, and that kind of baiting does not play well.
