5. How about a generic "I insist everyone to make the same choices I've made" forum |
|
That way the "I'm more liberal/vegan/energy efficient/environmentalist/etc." types can expound on how those who fall short of their own personal standards are bad people.
They can accuse each other of defensiveness, guilt, or uncaring/uneducated without any interference.

it's called freerepublic. There you can attack anyone for caring about the greater good at will, because it's ALL about "the individual" in Freeperville.

Let's start it now.

Okay, so there's a meat forum. All the carnis can post about their ribs and porterhouse cuts and be as nauseating as they'd like. However, still, when a thread is posted in GD about cutting back on meat, or how vegetarianism eases our carbon footprint, the same folks will come forth with their "but meat tastes good" and "I like bacon" brilliance. JUST the same as the veggie folks post in the Veg Forum here, but will also come out to the defense of a thread like that. JUST like the gungeon folks crawl all over every thread where the topic involves a bullet.
Without discourse, much of DU would be missing. I have a lot of respect for some of the posters I fight tooth n nail with in the meat/veg threads. We disagree on a topic. It's okay. My brother is a Republican, and I still love him and Christmas is a lot more fun conversation-wise.

23. The logic (or illogic) is . . . |
|
. . . that every time of those threads comes up, within three posts it devolves into the "cows are destroying the world" vs. "I like bacon" argument. Oh, and the inevitable pictures of hamburgers. It gets nowhere. The only thing that happens is people get really angry at each other.
Look, I'm being 98% facetious with this whole post. I just had to react to seeing that thread though, having seen those SAME ARGUMENTS for YEARS on this board. Doesn't anyone get tired of it? WTF? Hence the suggestion of a meat forum, where people could gather to hurl epithets ad infinitum and no one risks getting sucked in unawares. It's pretty silly, I know, but it was how I felt at the time.

25. You're asking for a Fight Club. |
|
And I like it.
You and I disagree on the "meat" topic, but I respect you in other regards around here. That's kind of why I responded how I did.
BUT, a UFC-esque forum where folks can go further underground here to have it out on topics like this (and smoking, and breastfeeding, and guns, etc) would be cleansing. And fun.

I really hate the fact that we have dungeons. They just seem to be a necessary evil. Ick.
I can say that I've never touched veal since seeing a thread on that years ago. We never had veal calves. That's just despicable. So, hey, maybe there is some good that comes out of these things.

32. Yeah, necessary evil I think is an appropriate term. |
|
And, as a militant vegan asshole, I can say that I appreciate your decision on veal. You could have said that to me, face to face, with a mouthful of bacon-wrapped filet and I'd still have thanked you for it, and respected you for it.
I do think that at times, good does come from these dust-ups here at DU.

30. Is there a vegetarian/vegan forum? |
|
If so, then fair is fair. I was a pescetarian for several years, but a health crisis put me back into the regular carnivore group. Now, I could easily give up cow, bird and pig. However, I just cannot give up crab claws, crawfish, or raw oysters. I'm married to a Cajun, if I gave up those things (along with Tabasco), it would be the end of the relationship.
