My parents were never very political. My dad has never voted, and my mom probably hasn't voted since she was my age, nearly twenty years ago. This year I made my mom register to vote. I wasn't sure if she was actually going to go out and vote or not. Now it's official. After watching Barack Obama speak this weekend, she called me on her way to work to make sure I was still up for getting her to the polls on Tuesday.
But wait, there's more. She also convinced her non-voting friend to go out Tuesday and vote for Obama.
I couldn't be more happy to be the offspring of this Obama-lover. I'll be the proudest daughter at the polls!

4. I had dinner last night with FIVE people of my parents' generation (all in their 80s). |
|
My mother, my aunt (wife of my late uncle, father's brother), my aunt's two sisters, and one of her sisters' husband. Everyone is relatively healthy for their age. Two use walkers.
When the waitress came to offer drinks and/or appetizers, I did what I'm doing more often. I asked "Who are you going to vote for on Tuesday??"
She (Jennifer) was taken aback (of course) and expressed misgivings about answering ... since "some folks" get angry about the answer.
Sensing a kindred spirit, I said "There are 6 votes for Obama at this table." (True.) After recovering from her obvious surprise that 5 white octagenarians and a white D.O.M. (dirty old man) were happily announcing their support for Obama, she confessed to being for Obama and that HER father was a eager Obama supporter. We observed that her father was a "wise man." She agreed.
It was a very nice evening. Good service. Good food. Good tip.
So much for this stuff about old (white) people not supporting Obama. I've been taking every opportunity to "come out of the political closet" in public ... and it feels RIGHT.
