WITH McCain having schlepped out the last minute heavy artillery - in the person of heavy-duty stand-ins like A. Schwarzenegger - question is, qué pasa with that other major West Coast Republican big name, top GOP star of them all, Nancy Reagan? Despite her fragility, she could've had a message, a surrogate, a video clip, a phone call. So? What? Why? How come? East Coast know-it-alls whisper she's supporting Obama. You're told: A) she's not really all that close with McCain and B) she's a prime supporter of stem-cell research, and he's not. Is what you're told.

One more bit of gossip. Close longtime McCainites are saying how delicious he used to be. Past tense. He was easy, freewheeling, liked a drink, loved a joke, told stories by the hour, worked off his own instincts. Was great fun. They're saying "was." They're asking what happened to the previous McCain.

POLITICS 101: If New Mexico's Gov. Bill Richardson, a really nifty guy who was our ambassador to the UN and our energy czar and wanted to run for president then wanted to be vice president and now is itching to be secretary of state, doesn't nail that, look for him to maybe become DNC chair . . . And drums from the West Coast are beating that Rudy operatives have been making noises that seem to sound like come Wednesday the Republican Party should anoint R. Giuliani as their main man . . . One more thing. Could be that up for attorney general should Obama make it is Eric Holder, formerly of Clinton's Department of Justice. Only slight hitch might be he was on the team that recommended Marc Rich's pardon . . . And one more thing. From Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas: "Have confidence in the institution. Just stand back, and see how it works." ....

FROM reader Jay Sonners: "So if Sarah Palin had married Jeremy Piven, then hockey's Denis Potvin, artist Andre Previn and finally Russia's Putin, wouldn't she then be Sarah Palin Piven Potvin Previn Putin?" Yeah, she would, and now, Jay, go away and leave us alone.
