Ah, the irony (Catholic Charities)
Catholic Charities had volunteers out on one of the busiest streets in our city the other day asking for donations as they can no longer meet demand for food, clothes and money. My immediate reaction, of course, was if they hadn't spent so much of Gawd's money on Hate (Prop 8), perhaps they'd have the food, clothes and monies they need to feed the less fortunate and they wouldn't be on the street corner begging for money. Just kind of shows where their priorities are.

In Massachusetts, Catholic Charities fought in favor of allowing gay families to adopt children.

However, the "Teen Challenge" charity is a freeperish cesspool.

9. Locally, people have to jump through
all kinds of hoops in order to receive any benefits from them. It takes WEEKS to get into their system and when you're about to lose your home, are hungry and have kids, you don't have weeks. I hate it that the Mormons are spending so much on the "Yes on 8" campaign but one thing I can say for them, when I needed services for any of my students (parolees), the Mormons would be there within a couple of hours with virtually whatever I asked for.

10. The Catholic Church in Mass. de-funded Catholic Charities' adoption program...
... rather than let them help gay people adopt kids.

Catholic Charities is constantly at odds with the Catholic Church (at least here in Massachusetts).

13. That is true pretty much anywhere across the coutry
CC is at the ground level and they see everything. As you get higher up in the Church you quickly get removed from the ground level and they become detached and out of touch to bring us Prop 8, defunding of all adoptions because two people of the same gender might adopt (many freak out over that for some strange reason).

It is like the Bishops and Catholic Charities live on two totally different planes. I would expect in California that most of those working with and in Catholic Charities are appalled that it is on the ballot much less the mean approach with the ads. For Prop 8 most Bishops use third party lay groups to get their message out so they do not alienate as many Catholics as they could by using other more official groups.

Catholic Charities stuns state, ends adoptions
Gay issue stirred move by agency

By Patricia Wen, Globe Staff | March 11, 2006

In a stunning turn of events, Archbishop Sean P. O'Malley and leaders of Catholic Charities of Boston announced yesterday that the agency will end its adoption work, deciding to abandon its founding mission, rather than comply with state law requiring that gays be allowed to adopt children.

The Rev. J. Bryan Hehir, president of Catholic Charities of Boston, and Jeffrey Kaneb, chairman of the board, said that after much reflection and analysis, they could not reconcile church teaching that placement of children in gay homes is ''immoral" with Massachusetts law prohibiting discrimination against gays.

''This is a difficult and sad day for Catholic Charities," Hehir said. ''We have been doing adoptions for more than 100 years."

Catholic Charities of Boston began in 1903 as an adoption agency primarily serving Catholic children left by parents who died or abandoned them.

Now, the Knights of Columbus contributed ...

$1,425,000

Headquartered in New Haven, CT, the Knights of Columbus has 1.7 million members and is required to provide life insurance to its members. Founded in 1882, it acts as the political arm of the Catholic Church. It has given millions of dollars to fight stem cell research initiatives and to fund constitutional amendments to ban same-sex marriage across the United States. The Knights of Columbus is chartered as a fraternal benefit society, and is set up as a 501(c)8 corporation.

19. Give your money wherever you want
I know the high regard you hold for religious organizations.

Catholic Charities performs many wonderful services for people who would go unserved without them. They do lots of good, just not as wide a net as they should. The good they do is still good.

26. Even Salvation Army differs from place to place
I volunteered in a Salvation Army program for street youth for four years in Portland. There were no religious requirements for getting meals, clothing, showers, a mailing address, or GED tutoring. They held an informal service on Sunday mornings, but no one was required to attend.

Furthermore, they went to bat for GLBT kids whose parents had thrown them out of the house, trying (often in vain) to convince clueless parents that their child was not being gay as a form of rebellion or misbehavior and that being thrown out of the house would not only not "cure" them but could also be a death sentence, due to street violence, drugs, and AIDS, among other things.

Then certain officials in the city government decided that the Salvation Army program was helping the street kids "too much" and "encouraging" them to stay on the streets (as if teenagers who had been thrown out of their homes or were escaping abuse had many other options), so they gave the contract to someone else and kicked SA out of the drop-in center that they had run for years.

After that, I met some of the kids I knew from the program, and they said that the new programs were not as well run, nor were the workers as nice.

I don't know how Salvation Army is in the Twin Cities, but they work with people whom no one else seems to want to work with.

20. My family is not Chatholic,
but CC was there to help my dad when my mom was dying from Parkinsons. They may not be a perfect organization, but they are a good one and I would give them money for the boots on the ground work they do.

I guess if you did deep enough into any group you can find something objectionable. I personally do not care for Salvation Army because of their stand on hiring gays, and the way (I perceive anyway) that they won't help you unless they are allowed to try to brainwash you. CC did not do anything of the kind. I called them, they were there, no judgments, no proselytizing.

I think the greater irony would be if they collectively have been supportive of the right, to now have all the big celebs in the movement mocking and dismissing Community Organizers. Now that would be a bitter pill, I would think.

28. Here is the story why Catholic Charities in Massachusetts closed it's adoption arm
http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/opinion/la-ed-prop8-2-2008nov02,0,7071124.story

Take the story of Catholic Charities. The service arm of the Roman Catholic Church closed its adoption program in Massachusetts not because of the state's gay marriage law but because of a gay anti-discrimination law passed many years earlier. In fact, the charity had voluntarily placed older foster children in gay and lesbian households -- among those most willing to take hard-to-place children -- until the church hierarchy was alerted and demanded that adoptions conform to the church's religious teaching, which was in conflict with state law. The Proposition 8 campaign, funded in large part by Mormons who were urged to do so by their church, does not mention that the Mormon church's adoption arm in Massachusetts is still operating, even though it does not place children in gay and lesbian households.

How can this be? It's a matter of public accountability, not infringement on religion. Catholic Charities acted as a state contractor, receiving state and federal money to find homes for special-needs children who were wards of the state, and it faced the loss of public funding if it did not comply with the anti-discrimination law. In contrast, LDS (for Latter-day Saints) Family Services runs a private adoption service without public funding. Its work, and its ability to follow its religious teachings, have not been altered.
