Obama: "I have just one word for you . . . tomorrow"

JACKSONVILLE, Fla, - Barack Obama started the last day of his Presidential surge in the state that started the Bush administration, promising that era is about to end.

"I have just one word for you, Florida: tomorrow," Obama told thousands of passionate backers who turned out on a late Monday morning in Jacksonville's Veteran's Memorial Arena

"Tomorrow, at this defining moment in history, you can give this country the change we need," he declared.

"In these last 36 hours we can't afford to slow down, or sit back, or let up, not one minute, not one hour, not one second in the next 36 hours.," Obama urged. "Not now. Not when so much is at stake. Right here in Florida, we can win this election."

How calm Mr Obama looked by comparison when he arrived at his first rally of the day at Jacksonville, also in Florida. He is a generation younger, yet even as he urged his supporters not to give way to complacency his manner was that of the elder statesman, unruffled, unhurried, not shooting from the hip, so in command of himself that he is almost in danger of being thought above the battle.

As they race for the line in this most gruelling of political marathons the contrast between the two candidates grows ever starker. John McCain has become an old man in a hurry, rushing across more states than Barack Obama, talking more frantically, pleading with the American people "to let me go on one more mission", campaigning up to the last moment and beyond.

It is true that for a moment Mr Obama thought he was in Ohio, not Florida, after which he said with a smile as he corrected himself, "I've been traveling too much."

Mr Obama paid tribute to his rival: "Senator McCain has served this country honourably and at the end of this long race I want to congratulate him on the tough race he has fought."

But this was followed by the lethal accusation that on economic policy, "John McCain has stood with George Bush every step of the way…George Bush dug us a deep hole and now he's trying to pass on the shovel to John McCain."

Barack Obama had two messages for Florida voters today: expect more negative attacks but keep working, the election is not over.

He reminded voters that it was in Florida that McCain said the “fundamentals of the economy” are strong, adding that his judgment was “fundamentally wrong.”

“Remember what he said when he was here in Jacksonville on September 15th? That day- that day more than 5,000 jobs were lost and more than 7,000 homes were foreclosed on,” Obama asked.

“In these last 36 hours, we can’t afford to slow down, or sit back, or let up, not one minute, not one hour, not one second,” Obama said, adding, “We’ve gotta win Florida and win this election.”

At a rally at the Veterans’ Memorial Arena, Obama predicted that the election will be close but that it will ultimately come down to who wants to win it more. “Understand at this point, I’ve made the argument - now it’s all about who wants it more - who believes in it more.”

7. That must have been tough to be upbeat-- he already knew
about his grandmother. But that's the kind of man he is-- grace under pressure embodied.
