Rachel Maddow on Thom Hartmann just now says she thinks that mccain can win this fair and square and
if not, she thinks that the GOP might steal this election. Damm! I am freaking out! To coin her, "Talk me down"!

in a weird, twisted sort of way. She just can't be selling out. Maybe she's just reading all those trumped up polls and news reports, the ones that are all wet.

I'm hoping for a 50-state sweep. Take that, Rachel!

The specifics are more complicated on a state level, but that is rough fact.

I didn't hear the conversation, but that's just being realistic. If certain groups of people just don't show up like they're projected to, it could happen; and it wouldn't require any more cheating than what's already taken place. It's unlikely, but possible.

37. Bullshit!
The only way they can win this election now is to steal it, like they have the last two. Obama has an even bigger percentage lead this year, and the amount of new voters registering democratic is through the roof; again. No, if Obama loses, we have been had again. The excitement level with Obama is unbelievable, his crowds are huge, McCain has lukewarm support from his own party; republicans right and left are abandoning him. He can't win this election, unless there is an intervention; period.

38. Rachel's just being sensibly pessimistic. Worst that could happen.
Worst = Republicans steal another one. She recognized lots of Republican efforts to reduce the Democratic vote count. Knows we will need an avalanche to get our landslide.

Rachel also thought the Republican GOTV effort in 2004 was extraordinary and if they had a super one this time they might be able to get ahead. Although that isn't likely.

40. I look forward to a happier, perkier Rachel early on Tuesday night
My suspicion is that she is 1) a natural pessimist and 2) acknowledges that a 2% likelihood of a McCain win isn't a 0% chance and 3) is concerned, and rightly so, about election fraud. It's not an irrational fear--we've been burnt in a big way before. This time, though, is different--the wind is at our back and so is the energy of the entire world. (And, fortunately, so are the polls.)

But she's right--there are paths to a McCain loss in the popular vote and a win in the electoral college. Those paths are extremely unlikely, and I think it will be a blowout of truly historic proportions, but it's not like the possibility doesn't exist. It's a teeny little possibility, but pessimists tend to see the teeny probabilities and see immense possibilities. It's just the way they are. I love her madly, but in the end, her opinion is just her opinion, even if she's on the teevee.

44. Greg Palast is worried they might steal this one too
http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=10804

It's November 5 and the nation is in shock. Media blame it on the "Bradley effect": Americans supposedly turned into Klansmen inside the voting booth, and Barack Obama turned up with 6 million votes less than calculated from the exit polls. Florida came in for McCain and so did Indiana. Colorado, despite the Democrats' Rocky Mountain high after the Denver convention, stayed surprisingly Red. New Mexico, a state where Anglos are a minority, went McCain by 300 votes, as did Virginia.

That's the nightmare. Here's the cold reality.

Swing state Colorado. Before this election, two Republican secretaries of state purged 19.4 percent of the entire voter roll. One in five voters. Pfft!

Swing state New Mexico. One in nine voters in this year's Democratic caucus found their names missing from the state-provided voter registries. And not just any voters. County by county, the number of voters disappeared was in direct proportion to the nonwhite population. Gore won the state by 366 votes; Kerry lost it by only 5,900. Despite reassurances that all has been fixed for Tuesday, Democrats lost from the list in February told me they're still "disappeared" from the lists this week.

Swing state Indiana. In this year's primary, ten nuns were turned away from the polls because of the state's new voter ID law. They had drivers' licenses, but being in their 80s and 90s, they'd let their licenses expire. Cute. But what isn't cute is this: 566,000 registered voters in that state don't have the ID required to vote. Most are racial minorities, the very elderly and first-time voters; that is, Obama voters. Twenty-three other states have new, vote-snatching ID requirements.

Swing state Florida. Despite a lawsuit battle waged by the Brennan Center for Justice, the state's Republican apparatchiks are attempting to block the votes of 85,000 new registrants, forcing them to pass through a new "verification" process. Funny thing: verification applies only to those who signed up in voter drives (mostly black), but not to voters registering at motor vehicle offices (mostly white).

48. On her show last night she dedicated a large segment to our right to vote...
She told us how the Right is doing everything it their power to create confusion and fear about voting. She told us to hang up when people call to tell us to vote on Nov 5th. She went on quite a bit about how no one will arrest anyone for anything at the voting polls. She drilled it into the audience that to vote is our right, and that we must protect and practice that right.

It's fine if you get irritable about her penchant to worry, but at least be fair. We aren't FOX News here.

absolutely correct, and if anyone doubts that the rethugs have some major tricks planned, they haven't been paying attention the last eight years. Really, our only hopew for victory is an overwhelming landslide that can't be tampered with. Fortunately, I believe that we are going to get that landslide.

54. Well, she's right
Don't count your chickens before they've hatched. What was worst for me about the 2004 results was not the idea that they'd stolen it, but that as many people as did voted for GWB thus making it easier to steal. Consider that Reagan got elected twice, in huge landslides. The American voting population is not to be trusted any more than those on the Republican side who would like to steal the election.
