I'm usually rather pessimistic, but I think they are too far gone to steal the presidency this time. |
|
I do think they will steal local races. I don't think they will steal the presidency because it requires too large a spread and the suspension of too much disbelief. If they let democracy happen, then can go on to steal other elections. I don't think we're going to get rid of the neoconservatives. I think they are willing to go underground, to regroup, and to manipulate what they can from the shadows. The only possible scenario is a repeat of Bush v. Gore where Obama gets the popular vote and Asshole gets the rurally-slanted electorals. Still, I think that's even a hard sell.
That being said, when Obama wins tomorrow it will be the first day towards a survivable future. We need to pressure him to use the power of the presidency to reverse almost a decade of Bush policies. Saying that we need to pressure him is not an 'insult.' Constituent pressure is what will validate his move away from the right. We need to be vocal.
I feel hope, but I don't count "hope" as some sort of wonderful emotional quality. I "hope" the fascist bastards don't steal the election. I "hope" they don't run things into the ground behind the scenes even after Obama wins.
What I want to feel is victory and the beginning of justice coming to pass. If Obama wins, it will be a small step towards social justice and the feeling of victory over a party that has come to represent the small, petty, and hateful elements of our country.

1. There is a lot of desperation out there. |
|
Maybe the ruling class will leave it alone this time. There are too many people in this country in a bad mood, and they have stopped spending. A populist with management skills would ultimately be good for business even if he or she believes in the Constitution.
I just want a President who believes in the Constitution, Barack Obama a Constitutional expert fits the bill for me.

3. Could it be that they're seeing (maybe their REAL internal polling) that the margin for error |
|
is too wide to allow them enough cover to steal.
It has to be close to be a reasonable steal that no media or anyone else will feel motivated to challenge. If they're seeing it's not that close, then that starts to close the window on any plans to steal. If they think there's a chance there'll be suspicion or that they might get caught, they'll hold back and wait til the conditions are more favorable for a cover-up - in some later election. I think that's part of their desperation. They see not an election win outright, but a realistic chance to steal it, fading.

6. John Yoo is also a "constitutional expert" |
|
So are Scalia, Thomas, Roberts, and Alito, as far as that goes.
Personally, I don't have much confidence in the "constitutional expertise" of someone who went out of his way to vote for something as blatantly unconstitutional as FISA.

11. Sometimes only Nixon can go to China. Barack Obama is a politician. |
|
Rendition has been going on for a long time but not on the current scale. If Obama is elected I expect to see the Unitary Executive become a relic of the past. Maybe Republicans will even be able to see the threat of their folly.

12. Yes, Obama is a politician |
|
a go-along-to-get-along politician who is willing to make ill-advised compromises for the sake of political expediency. Color me less than impressed. But I still held my nose and voted for him, because the alternative is worse.

This is a new day. It is too broad a spread to steal. They may retain some Congress positions, legally or nefariously, but the groundswell of his movement is too large for any stealer to stand in the way of. Bush isn't even this stupid, which is why he's been hiding.
An Obama has managed to prove so many talking points of the right completely foolish and stupid. When his policies dont pan out to be Socialist or whatever, he will win over even more people.

5. We have won, it's a foregone conclusion, and I am treating it that way. |
|
None of this "nail biter" crap.
Obama is so far ahead, the nation/world will see it as a total theft if McCain "wins" tomorrow night. You are correct, it is too far gone!

13. I do worry about them stealing house and senate seats, though. |
|
This is a huge problem. I'm so sick of this fascist minority screwing up this country. Let them be seen for the monsters they are and ostracized. Let their base dwindle to 10% and their sympathizers dwindle to even less. I'm way sick of them.
But for the most part: tonight we lose the Bushistas and gain something that is at least markedly better.

10. I don't think they'll steal it either. |
|
They'll steal enough to keep it from being a landslide, and they'll steal enough House, Senate, and local races to continue as a national party. But they WANT the Democrats in power.
They have robbed the treasury like mad for the past 8 years, and don't mind taking time to consolidate their ill-gotten gains.
They've made a mess of this country. Utterly wrecked it, with theft, arrogance, and incompetence. They KNOW they can't fix it. They're the party of Bad Government, and have no idea how to actually govern constructively.
They know we can fix it. But they've broken it so badly, that ALL we will be able to do is fix, we won't be able to enact most of our planned reforms that cost money. Most of our time and effort will be spent on cleaning up THEIR mess.
So they'll take a break, and let us take over. We'll clean up their mess, get this country back on track, and then they'll come crawling out of the woodwork again with their toxic ideas, ready to take over and loot the newly refilled treasury.
To stop them, we NEED to fix the electoral process in this country. No ifs, ands, or buts. That should be our FIRST priority, Jan 21 '09. Every eligible citizen should be able to register and vote without hassle. It's crucial to our existence as a democracy.

Much like the denazification programs or even the Bushistas "debaathification" idiocy (what is debaathification if not reislamicfundamentalismificiation?) we DESPERATELY need a destupification program.

16. The Math = The Map Is Too Spread Out |
|
The Obama campaign has played the process in magnificent fashion. They did it during the primaries and appear to be doing it again here. The spreading of the election deep into "Red" territory has created a lot of problems for the GOOP. To steal an election, you need to keep the results close and then localize where to steal it. Ohio, with Jennifer Brunner doing a great job, isn't a place that is that easy to steal this time...and I even suspect in Florida that Crist won't play the same dirty games Jebbie did (through Harris).
My hope is this election showed how sliming and non-stop negative attacks don't work. The GOOP's dirty tricks have been both put on display and shut down by the Obama campaign and it's drastically cut down on its effectiveness. Here's hoping we've seen the worst and our best days are just about to begin. Now let's get out the vote!!!
Cheers...
