Why do polls close at 6:00 PM in Indiana and Kentucky?
In many places people go to vote after work, and polls are open until 8:00 PM.

Unless, of course, both states are generous with absentee ballots.

1. Dunno about Kentucky,
but Indiana is just confusing, time-wise; there are 2 time-zones in that state!

Remember West Wing episode, when staff was stranded due to misunderstanding train schedules???

5. I thought that Indiana straightened this confusion a couple of years ago
so all of it is on the same time zone... or was it only about Daylight Saving Time?

7. Indiana did switch to daylight savings time
which ends most of the confusion, but NW and SW Indiana are still in the central time zone while the rest of the state is on eastern time.

2. Would make more sense to me, too, but also remember that the polls are open
all month for early voting,too.

3. So working people are less likely to vote.
That is the main reason that traditionally Republican Indiana has closed the polls at 6. Fortunately we do have early voting now, which alleviates the crunch to a certain degree.

6. As long as early voting does accommodate working people
If the polls are open only on weekdays from say, 7:00 am to 6:00 pm, working people still may have hard time getting to the polls.

We are going to find out, soon enough, how many voted in Indiana.
