Is it illegal to have yard signs at a polling place?
Edited on Tue Nov-04-08 12:11 PM by arcadian
The polling place closest to my house(not the one where I vote) was a sea of McCain/Palin signs. It is a county rec center. The highway along the rec center, county property, was lined with M/P signs and the the parking lot was lined with them all the way up to the end of the voters line. This seemed wrong to me. Is it illegal? Should I go get pictures? If illegal who should I contact at that polling place?

Thanks.

1. I'm not sure but
I think, at least in my state, they have to be 300 feet away from a polling place.

I believe the rule is that no signs can be within 100 feet of the voting area.
However, I have a feeling that a government entity (the county rec dept.) putting up election signs is illegal.

2. There are rules as to how close to the actual voting booths they can be.
I know I once went with party workers to put out signs, and they knew EXACTLY how close to the buildings they could be. We didn't put 'em an inch closer.

4. Sounds like electioneering to me, and yes it's illegal.
I'd contact the person in charge of that polling facility and bring it to their attention. They have a duty to address this issue.

5. They were around my polling precinct.
I believe they have to be so many feet from the entrance. (legally speaking)

6. I think it depends on the State you are in. Here in Ga. no poliitical
materials of any kind are permitted within XX of feet from the polling sites, and they're very strict about it! Some other States don't seem to care.

7. That depends on how far away they are
Typically, there is a statutory boundary of between 250 feet to as much as 1000 feet away from all entrances to the polling place inside of which electioneering is prohibited. Electioneering can include: buttons or clothing which supports a candidate or measure on the current ballot, signs, pamphlets, addressing voters with the intent of swaying their votes, etc.

If the signs are within this boundary, they are illegal.

8. Each state has different laws
Check with the person running the polling place and ask them. If not satisfied with the answer, check with someone from the local Democratic Party. Depending on your location, there should be a poll watcher from the party on-site or easily reached by phone.

9. In GA there is no campaigning or signage allowed within 150 feet of a pollling place.
Check withthe SoS of your state for the rules there.

Have the poll workers remove illegal signs. Bring a 100 foot tape to help them measure the distances from the polling place perimeter.

10. It is not illegal in Virginia,
but signs must be at least 40 feet away from the door of the polling place.

11. I can only speak to California's Election Code. Electioneering is NOT allowed within
100 feet of the ENTRANCE to the polling place. We in Orange County instruct the Polling Inspector to measure as close as he/she can 100 feet and place a sign there.

I've seen police force neighbors to remove their yard signs because they violated that 100 foot limit when voting was in the garage next door in a residential neighborhood.

14. Michigan is 100 feet away. No electioneering, or anything partisan within the boundary.

16. Whatever the "polling place" rules are, is this a county owned building?
Because if it is, that has to be illegal to put campaign signs on public property.
But then when have Repukes given a shit about the rule of law?
