If.

If we win tonight.

If Obama takes the White House, and the Democrats manage to secure a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate.

If.

If that happens, remember one thing.

WE WILL HAVE WON NOTHING.

Not yet.

Nothing except the chance to work harder than we ever have before.

The hard part comes tomorrow, and after January 20th.

The hard part comes when we have to maintain the level of passion, intensity and involvement AFTER the election is over.

We have to help with SCOTUS, as there may be as many as three vacancies coming.

We have to help fight against the inevitable right-wing backlash.

We have to help win the midterms in 2010.

We have to help fix the economy.

And health care.

And education.

And Iraq.

And Afghanistan.

We have to fix the Constitution.

We have a lot to do.

If we win tonight.

If we win, enjoy it.

Enjoy it, get some sleep, and then suit up again.

The hard part starts tomorrow.

If.

That's how far we've sunk into the neo-con theocratic Big Muddy.

Besides, a Nixon win would do wonders for bowling.

13. Never too early.
People who'd fought Reagan and Bush Sr. for 12 years thought they'd won something after Clinton got in. They relaxed, cuz they were exhausted.

That got us Newt in '94, and everything that has happened since.

Just sayin'.

24. Not so.
The lawsuit regarding Bush's definition of Executive Powers (re: denying subpoenas on the USAG matter) is moving towards SCOTUS. There is one sentence in the constitution defining Executive powers ("The President shall have Executive powers," and that's it), and the only controlling law is US v. Nixon, which says the president has some Executive Power, but it isn't total. It's a constitutional gray area.

If SCOTUS rules on that case in favor of Bush's definition of the scope of those powers, oversight is over, the separation of powers is over, and the White House will be above the law.

That's the ballgame, and that's but one area. Habeas is still up in the air, as is privacy and the scope of governmental intrusion.

Lots to do.

I will wait to judge Obama to see how much he will be "lobbyable" to do what the people want. There are many other issues that he voted on the correct side too.

But ultimately, the people need to start telling the DINOs, Blue Dogs, etc. in congress if they don't want to represent the base of this party instead of their corporate sponsors, they will have a short leash and be kicked on in the primaries of 2010 (which WILL be the election I think then).

Maybe that's just his jaw a-jackin trying to get elected. He doesn't yet have a Congress to work with and the complexion of his term or terms will be colored by those who surround him. FDR wasn't offered a choice on the legislation that he didn't author. WillPitt is right, tomorrow starts the march to 2010 and the mid-terms.

29. If
If a picture paints a thousand words,
Then why can't I paint you?
The words will never show the you I've come to know.
If a face could launch a thousand ships,
Then where am I to go?
There's no one home but you,
You're all that's left me too.
And when my love for life is running dry,
You come and pour yourself on me.

If a man could be two places at one time,
I'd be with you.
Tomorrow and today, beside you all the way.
If the world should stop revolving spinning slowly down to die,
I'd spend the end with you.
And when the world was through,
Then one by one the stars would all go out,
Then you and I would simply fly away

Or not.

Obama's "honeydew" list:
Fix the election process
Ensure that the criminals from the previous 8 years face justice (8? hell, more like 30!)
Fix media regulations-reinstate the fairness doctrine
Gut the treasonous wingnut movement
Stop the bleeding of jobs and the rewarding of corporations for doing the wrong things
Fix health care

etc.

Getting our foot in the door after being shut out for so long is only the first step. There's a whole-lotta house cleaning that needs to be done. The houses have been occupied by ill-raised and ill-mannered renters who've managed to trash the place and will probably chew the rugs before they leave. And they're not going to leave without a fight and some eviction notices being served.

Bring soap, bleach, elbow grease, and lots of fresh air and sunlight. The houses of government have festered in darkness, secrecy, and mold for far too long. Nefariousness and criminality can only flourish where the sun doesn't shine, so we're going to have to wrestle back the curtains. Hell, take them down and throw them away. The monkeys have been swinging from them and flinging poop all over for the last eight years.

Be careful where we sweep. The tattered pieces of our Constitution are laying about. We'll have to reassemble them carefully. They're probably in amongst the scraps of insider-trading chits and discarded pretzel bags.

But tonight, yes, sleep. Probably the first good sleep in eight long, dark, depressing years. Then back at it. We're putting a workable Congress in place, but like all Congresses, they won't work unless we stay on their backs like a bad rash.

Will, I still remember your excellent essay 5 years ago when you so eloquently excoriated the Occupant for his UN speech and the embarrassment he heaped upon the once proud reputation of our country.
A moment will come on January 20th, 2005. It will be cold in Washington D.C. A man who is not George W. Bush will raise his hand and swear and oath to preserve, protect and defend the United States of America. The words "So help me God" will be snatched by the wind and carried across seas and mountains to the furthest corners of the planet. When that happens, all of the Earth will be joined together in the deepest and most profound exhalation of relief. When that happens, George W. Bush will have become in his absence what he completely failed to be with his presence: A uniter.

45. And stay away from corruption
Let's face it. When we lost to Gingrich in 1994, it was because the levels of corruptions. Many members of Congress, and some from the White House were corrupted.

Of course, once the Republicans took over, they took over corruption, too, confirming the old saying of power corrupts.

Will we be able to stay honest? To expose and expel anyone who helps himself? We still have that member of Congress with money found in his freezer still in place.

Mostly, winning will mean that we really are a big tent with diverse opinions. Will we be able to do what a legislative body is expected to do: debate and compromise?

Which means that once compromises are reached, DU will be the first to condemn and to demand recalls...

60. Please...
the Gingrich "revolution" was just the first result of the mighty wurlitzer, due to the corporate consolidation of the media by GE and the like, and they began taking marching orders directly from the RNC, as they do today. The country was suffering from the effects of trickle down, and the media blamed it all on the Democratic Congress instead of on Saint Ronnie, and started the "throw the bums out," and "term limits" BS to get Republicans elected.

Why do we have to form circular firing squads all the time?
We got raped over and over, and some seem insistent on blaming the victim.

52. YES!! This was the lesson of 2006, and the DO NOTHING Pelosi!
Hopefully we'll have more "lobbyable" people in congress than Pelosi was the last two years, but the hard work is just about to begin as you state. And it is ESSENTIAL!

That is one reason that even though I've not been able to help much with this election, I'm moving to Portland, Oregon next week from here in San Diego. I really feel that is a place I can hopefully get more bang for my buck for the work that's yet to come in 2009 and later!

Sorry. I don't like how serious I am. But there is global warming.

75. Correct. The ship...headed in the wrong direction...
...started taking on water. We Democrats were helpless, until 2006...when we started plugging up the holes. Now we have a chance to turn the ship around and get it back on course. We've worked hard, and deserve to savor the moment and celebrate.

But, shortly after that, we HAVE to repair the ship and rebuild it stronger than ever! That will require leadership (which we finally will have with President Obama), unity (which Obama will need all of us to support), and working diligently together to build the 21st century country our children and grandchildren deserve.

Great post, Mr. Pitt!

and I've said so more than once.

"Let the healing begin."

Nope, sorry, no can do. I'm not ready to make nice, and maybe I never will be. It isn't a matter of revenge at all, but a matter of JUSTICE--not the same thing at all. The neocons MUST be held accountable for their crimes, or else we risk a relapse, just like after Iran-Contra got shoveled under the rug. But then I really shouldn't need to explain this on DU.

83. There's more
We have to make "Republican" such a dirty name they have to re-name the party. This actually happened in Canada. Unfortunately they renamed it to something with the acronym CRAP until saner heads prevailed.

We have to make sure Dubya and friends are prosecuted as war criminals before they bolt to Paraguay.

We have to revoke every one of Dubya's "signing statements".

We have to roll back every loosening of enviromental protections.

We have to revoke the Patriot Act.

We have to revoke No Child Left Behind and every other one of their mis-named money grabs.

I am privileged to have known you, sir. One :patriot: to another :patriot:. Fucking Bushies wouldn't know what a :patriot: was if it slapped them in the face with a dead fish. Morans can quote Savage Weiner and Loofah O'Harrassment, but not Paine and Jefferson. Contemptible lot, eh?

Like to meet you in person someday, too. If you are ever going to be in the Philly/Allentown/Lancaster/Harrisburg area of SE PA, please PM me a couple of weeks beforehand, 'cause I'd like to buy you a few drinks, buddy boy.

Say hi to your mom Raven for me, too.

Obama ran a brilliant campaign, and I was and am proud as hell to have been part of his "shoeleather army" yesterday and his Phone Battalions before that.

He was tough as he needed to be AND kept to the high road. Imagine that! After Gore and Kerry, I had begun to wonder if it was possible to be so.

It is. I started off with a tepid conviction many months ago. I was for Edwards, after all. And Clinton's mirroring of Bushie rhetorical tactics soured me rapidly on her.

But Obama, as he done for so many others, won me over.

All I had to do was listen to the man.

And yes, the work begins and yes, actions speak louder than words. But the actions will come.

I see now, and it was even dawning on me a couple weeks ago watching him parry the Bush Lie Machine, that he just might be one of The Great Ones.

Even if he isn't, the next four years will be splendid and recuperative for America, as every aspect of our nation needs healing, economic, environmental, constitutional..all of it and more.

As with everything, we shall see. It all starts the day after MLK Day, Jan 20th, 2009.

For myself, I am ecstatic to have been wrong about my more immediate sinister suspicions (though in the "worst case scenario", God Forbid, we have only delayed Bushie Plans, not destroyed them...on this day of JOY there shall be no such gloomy talk).

Happiest plate of crow I EVER et!

:toast:

The Bushie fuckers couldn't do it. They didn't dare flip a margin that big. Oh, they have their old tricks, and I learned another during my and my friends' part in the GOTV today. Puerto Ricans in NE PA districts were issued "special" voters registration cards with ZERO INFORMATION about polling places, while white people's cards have the polling places clearly listed ON the registration card - very smart and evil Bushie method of quietly peeling off another percentage slice of the "undesirable voters" by keeping them away from the polls.

I wonder just how much of this shit is carried out commonly at the local level where Bushies run communities and counties with minority population centers (but not enough to contol the county or area)?

Knowing the Bushies, it's everywhere a Loyal Bushie Mole can skirt past apathetic or lackadaisical security and slip such a "mistake" into the Voter Registration System like that.

So, yes, the work has just begun.

Oh, I think the dancing will go on for some weeks yet. Because when the shovel is picked up again, it's gonna take five time the efforts it took to get Obama elected. Already got my little part of the Battle Line picked out (not that I won't be lending a hand to other efforts along the way as the need arises): MAKE THE FIRST TUESDAY IN NOVEMBER A NATIONAL HOLIDAY TO INCREASE TRANPARENCY AND VOTER TURNOUT.

It's simple, understandable, obvious and it plays well to the crowd that can only hear in sound-bytes. Plus, it makes "Common Sense".

So, let's take some time to smell the roses, guy!

:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

... was sitting back and coasting on autopilot once they'd scored some victories.

The right way, truth, compassion and real freedom do NOT automatically prevail, without us tending to them and making sure they live on.

That's what makes Obama truly remarkable-- he recognizes this:

I approve this message to ask you to believe -- not just in my ability to bring about real change in Washington. I'm asking you to believe in yours.

It's about more than Obama-- it's about all of us.

Obama has made us believe in our own power as citizens again.

Let us use it!

130. If this is a "war for the soul of the USA" then put my name in the hopper for the draft.
I'm not so old that I can't remember the Peace Corp's beginnings.
I'm not so old that I can't DO something.
I have a lot of life experienced.
And I want to be of service.

Gotta be a lot more like me.
Baby Boomers who still believe.

131. Lovely prose. But we've won a hell of a lot. I refuse to take anything away from this moment.
I refuse to try and make a dramatic statement purely for the effect. We have won a hell of a lot this week. The hard work part was part of the package and understood when we started this.

133. Letters
Be ready to send a steady stream of letters and email supporting whatever Liberal effort or bill you want to have action on.

The right wing nutjobs and whackos will be anxiously awaiting orders from their Corporate Masters on which letter to write and which issue to oppose.

134. We won America's trust
Now we just have to keep it. It's won't be easy but I know we can do it if we stick to our principles. :dem:

I'd have recommended if it wasn't too late to do so.

136. It's not wrong, and you only beat me to it beacuse I was on the road
I am shuttling between Germany and England (now in London, but in Germany again tonight),
b ut was thinking exactly the same thing. This was a long hard fight, but now comes the
REALLY hard part.

Let's not blow it. There will be way too many people furious at Obama and the Democratic
Congress for not repairing the economy, withdrawing from Iraq and Afghanistan, and enacting
universal health care by Feb. 1, 2009.

It ain't gonna happen by Feb. 1 2009. If it's going to happen at all, we have to work for it.
