I have been here a little over 4 years now
Been reading DU though since shortly after it started.

Through it all I have found wonderful friends here, people I could talk to about life and politics.

Tonight I feel proud that I can be here with you on this historical night.

Since the first time I voted in 1984 there is not a bush or Clinton on the ticket. For the first time in history we have two minorities on the ballot.

For the first time in a long time I have hope that things will change for the better. Tonight will be just a start.

4 Years ago I sat in a hotel room in Chicago (there on business) and saw Obama speak, and I thought 'this man will be President someday' - and I believe he will be before this night closes.

For all the infighting and arguing here I have seen (and been part of) since I came here I believe tonight is one of unity here.

Tonight we stand together, and for me there is no better feeling this night then being a part of such a wonderful site as this on a historical day like this.

Let us remember tonight all those DU'ers who have passed - from Kephra to Andy - and remember their posts in support of this night - I lift my glass to all those we have lost this night and thank you for the many memories you gave us. I hope this night will make you all smile up there in Heaven.

We didn't forget you, and we will never forget your struggle for this night.

3. nice post, but a minor correction....
I believe there is only one minority member on the major ticket (incl only dems and republicans-- there have been minority members on the rest of the ballot before!). Or are we talking about two different things?

Barak Obama: black male (minority in America)
Joe Biden: white male

John McCain: white male
Sarah Palin: white female

?

4. Female and Black Male
First time I think we have had a minority on both tickets.

5. I believe females are actually the MAJORITY of the adult population....
Edited on Tue Nov-04-08 03:25 PM by mike_c
Humans have a 50-50 sex ratio on average, but by middle age I believe females outnumber males.

on edit: I read some other interesting factoids recently-- American colleges have awarded more bachelors degrees to women than men since the early 1980s, more masters degrees since the 1990s, and as of this year, more PhDs! That's pretty cool! Certainly, I've had more female grad students than male since I began teaching grad education in 1997.

9. I get it-- I just don't like hearing women called a "minority..."
...at least in this country. They're not a demographic minority at all, but as you say, they're under-represented in politics.

7. I still have not forgotten...

I followed our story and sent good vibes to all.

I too feel, or maybe hope, past losses we all suffered around the same time may not sting so much when the light of unity shines upon us all.

Peace,

MZr7

edit: time to restart firefox... double post, failed edits... grrrrr
