A story I have to relate to DU |
|
I went out to my local election night party, to watch the election results tonight. As it became increasingly clear that Obama was going to win, I called my father, and then my step father. Both in their late 50's, I asked them if they had ever seen anything like the crowds that came out to support Obama, the energy. Both of them said the last time they saw anything like it was with Kennedy, but even then the support was not as profound. Finally, I found a very old woman at the party. She was the mother a public servant there, and had lived through the Great depression and WWII. Very elderly. I asked her if she had seen anything like it before. She carefully thought through the many elections she had seen, and finally told me the last time she had seen this kind of movement was when FDR WAS ELECTED PRESIDENT!
After hearing her experiences during the Great Depression and WWII, I realized that she was being completely serious: The last time this kind of change happened was with FDR's presidency.
Anyway, any of you that doubt you saw history being made tonight should think again. I just heard it directly from the mouth of America's greatest generation: Change is coming!!!
Peace.

3. This is a unique moment in history |
|
Nobody has done anything like this, ever.
Not Reagan. Not JFK. Not FDR, or Teddy, or Lincoln.
Nobody.
No comparison will be sufficient. Barack Obama is sui generis, and his historical era will likewise be unique.
The era will be "big" like the 1960s, the 1930s, the 1860s, but it will be entirely its own time.
Let us savor the moment. It is a moment that may well last 8 full years.

4. Nearly 50 years in the making. |
|
This is the culmination of the Civil Rights movement of the 60's that made people think differently. The Martins, Hosea's, Bobby's and Rosa's.
Change is not coming. It's here!
